I wouldn't be in this mailing list if I knew Coldplay or Travis would be discussed here. For that we have the NME. I like many things outside idm, but what is the purpose of this discussion? Okay, I like world music like Dervish. Let's start a discussion about Celtic Music in this mailing list, complaining about how Enya sucks? My girlfriend was an indie-kid, as was I, but after 3 years of going out with a geek like me she's grown to love her techno (Umek, Luke Slater, anything hard or on Tresor) and yesterday she bought her first Ninja Tune album. How's that for training? Glenn Record Camp wrote:

I agree, to a point. Something like a call for off-list discussion, or perhaps the creation of a "idm-lite" list ;D Coldplay is an indie band that happen to get airplay without having to sell out. While the merits of such a thing, or the quality of their music may be a worthwhile discussion, it doesn't really fit on a list that discusses electronically created music with a relatively complex background, musically speaking. But oh well. The occasional Portishead post or indie-rock post happens and thrives, but they're not about to "turn the IDM-l into something not IDM-l." One of the things I've always liked about this list is that the interests of the people on it are incredibly diverse, and most lists about a specific genre boil down to a band or two that everyone on the list loves, and the discussion focuses on emotion and No True Scotsman fallacies. At least on the IDM-l, most of the arguments actually back up their positions with "well I'm not a fan of music that's technologically advanced simply for the sake of advancement," and it makes sense, instead of "coldplay are so not indie, they're on the radio, they suck." :D But this is just a variation of a shout-out, really, so it's no big deal. It's like asking "I'm into IDM, and I also like metal/folk/classical. Does anyone else here like that, or have any recommendations in either genre or a mix of the two/three/four?" So live 'n learn ;D derek On 31 Jan 2002, =?iso-8859-1?Q?C=E9sar?= Laia doth wrote:

Are you serious? Indie girls are often some of the most vacuous, flippant females I've ever had the discourtesy of experiencing. Besides, IDM boys aren't the object of their affection -- it's EMO BOYS!

i think those are excellent points. if we of the idm list get too genre-bound, then we'll be just like the junglist lists--unable to take an interest in anything outside our little world. personally, as i mentioned before, it's coldplay's interesting uses of harmonic effects in their chords that interests me--a phenomenon that can easily be related to idm composition. blake/ Clockworm http://mp3.com/clockworm ----- Original Message ----- From: "EggyToast" <youn0394@umn.edu> To: "César Laia" <cesar.laia@popsrv.ist.utl.pt>; <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Thursday, January 31, 2002 12:53 PM Subject: Re: [idm] *WAY* OT: Coldplay (was: Re: [idm] minor threat/OurBandCouldBeYourLife)

You know, a while back, I read all these articles about how James Mudrizcki (or whatever) from Puressence sings like an angel and looks like a footballer. I'd be into British indie boys if they really did look like footballers. On the other hand, he can belt out a tune like nobody's business. Where's that third album? Oh well, we'll get that before new Chavez, won't we? --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

There's nothing more enjoyable in life than listening to proponents of one rave micro-genre explain how another rave micro-genre sucks. Except maybe removing your own eyes with a spoon and setting them on fire. Let's just like music and talk about it. We focus on IDM, but sometimes we color outside the lines. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Oh well, I think you are right. I like idm, but maybe idm does not occupy even 50% of what I hear regularly. The problem, I guess, is that I don't like neither Coldplay, nor Travis :] For songs, I rather go for Spiritualized, Sparklehorse or Smog, less mainstream and more complex tunes, I guess... Afx and Autechre did remixes for Saint Etienne, and I *love* Saint Etienne ;) Cesar --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
