After I joined the group early last year (prompted by reading Kim Cascone's
article in Leonardo Computer Music Journal), I mentioned the IDM list to a
friend of mine. He's a Max/MSP and NATO performer who has toured with
Tortoise and gets around with many of the musicians that come up on the IDM
list. His comment was similar to this one, that the IDM listers are fan
boys obsessed with what color shoelaces Rob and Sean are wearing this month.
And it is funny and true.
However, having said that, I have noticed that a large number of the people
here are involved in producing or promoting work themselves, and doing good
work. I have also had the fortunate opportunity to trade CDs with several
others on the list, and I have really enjoyed what I've heard. So I think
I'll take the good with the bad, it's easy to press DEL with subject lines
so incendiary and obnoxious as this last one. It is interesting that every
newsgroup and list has this kind of garbage that a person needs to filter
through. I wonder what it is that compels us to gossip and nitpicking, how
is it working for and against us? I grew up in a pretty small town and I
still don't understand how it works, even though I've fallen into it myself
(see my early postings about Max/MSP and NATO for some personally
embarrassing behavior). I realize the IDM list has it's share of "humorless
whiners" but it is also a community of great talent, IMHO. Any thoughts
on this?
