I've seen her play twice, she probably is the most talented drummer playing now. I first saw her last year at noisepop in chicago (playing for yo la tengo) and then again with Pauline Oliveros' New Circle 5. She brings a bands sound together so well. I talked to her in New York and she supposedly has an album released on Tzadik last month. As for Elvin Jones (also mentioned) I think his playing on Sun Ship (John Coltrane) is brilliant, he's a mad genius. Also he was recently on an album by Bill Frissell with Dave Holland (Bill Frissell was in Naked City i believe, and Dave Holland was the other part of Coltrane's later rhythm section), but i haven't had a chance to listen enough to say whether this album is worth while or not yet... i'd suggest picking up madlib's project "yesterday's new quintet" on stones throw. it is a really great album, and is a great in-between for hip-hop and jazz. i feel like a lot of the time when people try and mix the two, it winds up turning out corny... if you want just straight-up great jazz, miles davis quintet with hancock, tony williams, ron carter, and wayne shorter is the shit. any of those albums is great: sorcerer, nefertiti, esp, filles de killimanjaro. most anything miles did was incredible, from his early be-bop stuff, cool jazz (check birth of the cool), modal stuff like kind of blue, cinematic albums like sketches of spain with gil evans, early fusion- bitches brew, in a silent way, miles in the sky, agharta, pangaea, live-evil, etc. etc. etc... of course john coltrane- check out transition, a love supreme, and giant steps for classic songs. herbie hancock- after leaving miles- made a lot of great albums with more of a fusion feel: headhunters, fat albert rotunda (and the other stuff he did with mwandishi), sextant, thrust, etc. ornette coleman, anthony braxton, don cherry, sun ra... there's a lot of people who did or who are doing real sick free jazz and intense compositions, just stretching everything out, you know? there's so many incredible albums, it depends on what kind of jazz you are looking for. personally, i'd stay away from some of the newer stuff that tries to blend jazz and funk and shit cause, most of the time, it sounds like some bad brand new heavies or horrid acid-jazz. zak.
