I was coincidentally listening to Soccergirl EP & PS I
Love You this morning when I came across this post on
the Planet Mu messageboard. It's written by Kid 606
(safe to assume, I believe), in response to somebody
slagging on him.
Anyway, just passing it on because I think it's so on
the money, and I respect him and what he's doing all
the more for this post, though I still don't like
everything he's released, and I still will continue to
like some of the formula-followers that he's not into.
such is life... here's a link to the thread, and then
the text:

spending time complaining on message boards that you
could do
something with your eyes shut that someone
else is making a living and having the time of life
doing? tsk,tsk
im sorry i dont make records designed to make the
people who end
up obtaining them happy and that just doing what i
want and feel is best doesnt fall within what you want
to hear.....
but on the other hand im glad im not another
creatively devoid
electronic musician trying to put together just the
right hipster elements
and audio tricks at any given time period to appeal to
a certain group of people...
and im also glad im not like all the wonderful
musicians out there
who just do what they want (in theory) and what comes
out just happens
to be what their audience wants to hear....
does it make me a worse musician? probably but i think
thats dope as well...
for a shitass musician to get somewhere is a fucking
acheivement in
my book, word up to the underdog while everyone else
is just going through the steps already set before
them of exploiting their "talent".....
the main difference for me between the backstreet
boys/n sync and most shit electronic idm acts is that
someone else is pulling the strings with the boy bands
and carefully planning what they should do, while
these other "independant" musicians are just carefully
planning what they should do and pulling there own
strings....because its not a profitable enough
industry for anyone to waste time being a
svengali....I am not dissing him but brothom states is
to autechre
what O-town is to n-sync....eat it up......
not to hate on a well executed and devised plan or
formula cause that deserves respect also but its not
what me or any of the artists i like are doing....
it would be nice if someone ever asked me what the
fuck goes on with my filter
of what i release and what i dont and what kind of
judgment i use
cause ill be the first to admit its dodgy as fuck and
ive been flying by the seat of my pants since i
started releasing music, sorry for not letting that
stop me, and im sure a lot of people will think im an
idiot for making that statement.....but all my
favorite artists are the same way, and if they didnt
take chances id have never heard some amazing
music....
i could run my next album through the "idm list
filter" or the "planet mu messageboard" filter and
most likely get something that would pass but
other than making a few people happy for a very short
period of time (and myself miserable) it wouldnt sound
nearly as different or special as if i just ran it
through
the "this is what i want and am proud of" filter....it
would probably just sound like a lot of records you
already own....
(which seems to be what must people want)
and on a sidenote i dont understand why i am "so
popular" either or what it means or if it will last
but do i think i deserve it?
hell yes.
no matter if you like it or not, there is a reason why
you actually listened to my music (and in turn put
more money in my pockets, thank you! steal away!)
and i have never heard any of yours.....
hate on haters,
miguel
