So, as winter is approaching here in Finland, I was thinking of what albums should I buy for winter listening. What would be suitable for winter, to listen while watching the snow fall in darkness or after skiing to some isolated place, far from everything. I was thinking of getting Vangelis' Antarctis and Biospheres Substrata, what else? Oh yes, speaking of Substrata, what do you think of Substrata 2? How good is the second cd, and how does it fit to the overall mood? Heard the original material was remixed, how good is the remixing quality? You see, I have had troubles finding the original substrata here in Finland, but the Substrata 2 is available (it is slightly more expensive though). So is it safe to buy the Substrata 2, instead of tracking down the original album? Back to the original question now. Obviously some sort of ambient seems to suit winter rather well, but do not hesitate to recommend a completely non-ambient record, it might get boring to listen only to ambient the whole winter. Thank you in advance, |visa k.

Wonderful thread idea... The only full albums that I can think of immediately would be Windy and Carl's "Volume 02 - Antarctica" and Subconciousness by Neina. As for single songs: Nobukazu Takemura: Icefall ISAN: Ampule Hope this is what you were looking for! Paul --- visa k <v.kuoppala@pp.inet.fi> wrote:

as i understand it, the original music is not remixed, it's remastered. the difference from the original is almost none. that's what i've heard, anyway... hs -- _____________________________ fossil fuel for fossil people --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Wow, actual IDM suggestions :D I'd suggest all Boards of Canada. It worked really well for me last winter, and the winter before. And I'm in Minneapolis -- we get *real* winters here :D I'd also add Zammuto's "Solutiore of Stareau - disk 1" ;D and half of Chiastic Slide, mainly "rettic ac," "tewe,""hub,""calbruc,""recury,""pule," and "nuane." derek ------- eggytoast.com ------- fresh like pie --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The way I determine seasonal albums is by the time of their release date. Many artists choose certain times of the year to release an album based on the type of feel that it has. It's worked out pretty well for me throughout the past couple of years or so, and I can look at many CD's I have and tell what season it belongs in. I'd look forward to new releases starting as early as next month. Just my opinion. i like this thread idea...particularly because i'd compare most of the music i listen to as having a sort of 'cold'ness to it... anyway, i'd recommend: snd-stdio-->sure, it's clicks and glitches, but there's also beautiful harmonics and melodies to go along with them. a sort of fragile, hidden beauty. while-lock/even/haze-->while's music is probably the best thing i've heard in a long time, moderately complex beats, dark/sad synthesizer lines, and the occaisonal beatless tune as well. i used to drive around in my car aimlessly to these last winter. autechre-incunabula-->what can i say? it's a classic and has what i consider sounds which could liken it to a winter soundtrack peter benisch-soundtrack saga/waiting for snow-->this guy makes _the_ music to coincide with the last/first few months of each year. sometimes minimal, sometimes excessive, always moody, cold-sounding, and frigid. aphex twin-i care because you do-->to me, it has a very ethereal feeling to it, alot of the songs invoke images of gazing at frozen wastelands on far away planets. andre estermann-balloon-->much like aphex twin's ICBYD, except newer. how's that? rob. www.electronicmusicreviews.com _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

DOSC is a Seattle-based artist... the links j snod provided will take you to his site/label. Status Negatives is a nice album--full of slow, resonant synths and skritchy beats. It has a bit of a melancholy or contemplative feel to it. I can think of only one album that hasn't yet been mentioned: Lycia's "Cold" on Projekt review: http://www.lastsigh.com/reviews/lycia.cold.htm Maybe not "idm," but ambient as hell, and would mix well with Biosphere's last two albums in a changer. Bjork's "Vespertine" kind of has that "winter" feeling to it. "Aurora" opens up with what sounds like someone trudging through snow. Winterized or not, the album is great. - GX --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Well, I'd recommend F.S. That Windy & Carl record is really just called "Antarctica"; it's Volume 02 of the Bliss Out series that Darla put out a while ago... there were a couple of nice records in that series, mostly earlier on: Flowchart's "Tenjira", Mirza's "Anadromous", Transient Waves' "Wading & Waiting", &c. But as for W&C, the "Antarctica" EP and "Drawing of Sound" LP are enduring favorites, the latter also being a good "winter" choice, though it has some warmer moments as well. I haven't bought their last couple of albums, so Idunno how their sound has progressed. My favourite winter album: Peter Benisch "Waiting For Snow" on FAX. His latest album "Soundtrack Saga" is also great. More "warm" and melodic than "WFS", there's more strings and pads and even occasional vocal bits, but Benisch's style is easily recognizable. Could be a gem for those who like 'waiting for snow part 8'. -- Best regards, Nick mailto:ambi@mu.ru --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
