Most largely, I must (sadly) agree with this statement, Lance. I really adore Drome(d), as well as all the Nonplace UF stuff I could lay my hands on. I have recently had the chance to purchase Con Ritmo, but after a quick listen, decided not to. Likewise, Just Landed is "nice" in a not-too earth shattering way. But I have JUST obtained "plays love songs" which I find outstanding. I've played the entire thing three times over, non stop, and it's still going strong! Maybe the reason is that these tracks stem from "pre-1996-2000", in other words, from the older period when he was making the music I loved, and which he's now apparently moved away from. But I'd like to recommend this album to anybody who's even vaguely a Friedman fan; the man's full of interesting ideas. (Unlike Just Landed, which is dubby and pleasant, but not exactly eclectic or innovative). All of this ***imo*** :-) I * --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I can't speak much about his past catalog but I think the Bernt Friedman mixes on the new Pole record are ace. They remind me of why I like the Flanger albums so much. A little tongue in cheek lounge-jazz meets dub meets glitch. BTW the whole 'R' album is great. Top notch mixes from all. The Kit Clayton trax smoke. And all over the record I find (gasp) mostly untreated guitar chords? Excellent! n. On Tue, 25 Sep 2001, Irene McC wrote:

Couldn't agree less! (IMO...) I find him one of the most fascinating artists around at present and find myself consistently drawn in by the complexity and variety of programming and the cleverness and playfulness of his sonic ideas on both Flangers and the Con Ritmo. On the other hand I've got the NonPlaceUrbanField and find it a bit grey. Though I do agree that Plays Love Songs is wondrous - a very ambiguous/mischevious take on on masculinity! I've heard a whisper that a new Flanger is on its way as well as a duo album with Jaki Liebezeit. All the best, Colin.

there is a new flanger album coming out called "Outer Space - Inner Space" coming out on the 5th of november in the uk, and possibly a week earlier in the us. there's also a single 'inner spacesuit' which is out on the 8th of october. there was going to be a tour with Jaki Leibezeit but Flanger just decided to postpone it as they were going to Russia & Japan. Check http://www.ninjatune.net/live for the full statement we received. how to describe the sound? twisted idm jazz. we love it. but then we would. nB --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

aw, bummer ... for this one time that a decent IDM act was going to perform in Belgium and it gets cancelled :( (although I totally understand the reason why) Well, there's still the dj FOOD & Co night, that sounds pretty interesting too. However, I haven't heard Con Ritmo and do not mean to slate it. The one I was referring to was actually Flanger's Midnight Sun, which I found to be Latin, light and fluffy. Just wanted to clear this up, in case my comment was misleading. Unintended error. I think you've put your finger on one of the things that fascinates me about Bernd's Flanger/Con Ritmo work - that on first listening much of his recent work sounds disposable, light, etc. However, it's been my experience that just as 'difficult' music demands (and repays) application, so does his and there's an amusing sort of contradiction here - the idea of concentrating on music which at first sounds disposable is rather ridiculous - I like that! and I like the playfulness implied by such work. All the best, Colin.
