I just picked up The Coup's "Steal this Album". (Dear Dan John,) It's rap. It's real nice. My favorite tracks are: "Me and Jesus the Pimp in a '79 Granada...", "Underdogs", and "Piss on your Grave". The last one grabbed me first. It's funny, has a catchy hook and the sounds (samples?) are fun. The other two showcase the lyrical abilities of lead rapper Boots Riley (he's got writing credits) and have more subdued beats. They're really engaging reflections on what it was like for him growing up. The Coup is: Boots Riley, E-Roc and DJ Pam the Funkstress. "Kill My Landlord" is a class-act classic. This one should easily be included on any seminal hip-hop top-10 list. IMHO, a better album than "Steal This", though that one is pretty good. ======================================================================= Brian MacDonald <brianm@kuci.org> ======================================================================= On Thu, 19 Jul 2001, nobo jackson wrote:

Genocide & Juice is a great album, with its clever sequed skits, and the best track - Repo Man, the production is super tight, had all that violin & cello shit 6 years before dr. dre. -i --- nobo jackson <iamnobojackson@hotmail.com> wrote:

Genocide and Juice was always my favorite. The Coup somehow managed to seamlessly blend ghetto East Oakland rap with brilliant political/social commentary to create their own unique sound. They just switched over to 75 Ark Records (Automator's label) and recently released a new 12inch entitled "5 Million Ways to Kill a CEO". Haven't had a chance to pick it up yet so I don't know how it sounds, but the new album should be out soon. Dope live show as well. Last time I saw them @ Maritime in Frisco, Pam the Funkstress did a nice scratch routine whilst simultaneously removing her bra from underneath her shirt. Good shit. J Houde
