IMO - muddlin' gear has a very nurse with wound feel. yes it is loose & hectic, but i suspect that was the intent. it is also funky & freaked out. i cannot think of any other "idm" type album like it, though it might appeal to folks who enjoy phthalocyanine? chris. I liked both Muddlin' Gear and Lipswitch. Muddlin' Gear might appeal to Pthalo fans somewhat, but I liked Muddlin Gear a lot, yet haven't liked any Pthalo I've heard, probably because I'm too pop-oriented for my own good. As good as a lot of recent music is, I have to say the last album that truly blew my mind in a life-changing kind of way was the RDJ Album. Mostly because before then I'd never heard anything like it; I was uninitiated as far as any electronic music goes. Less "mind-blowing" experiences have been had since, where an album struck me as very very good, like Autechre's Chiastic Slide (took me forever to enjoy them), Proem's stuff, Squarepusher, BoC, Bogdan, Jamie Lidell... I could go on and on with the "very good" stuff. But nothing has been so revolutionary to my ears as RDJ Album - and the kicker is that even RDJ Album isn't revolutionary when placed in the Warp/IDM/etc. context... only to me because I hadn't heard anything like it before. It's all context !D -Adam --- zimbo <tofu@falco.kuci.uci.edu> wrote:

I know that the record was released on Green Label, a drum & bass label out of San Fran... You could try to find their website for more info. I quite like the stuff on there from Panacea and Venetian Snares, as well as interesting stuff from 'DJ Scud', but the track which really grabs me is by Echo - 'Sinistar'. Anyone know some background on these artists? Anig Browl Well, I've never heard the CD you are referring to, but I am willing to bet most of it wasn't breakcore, but drum n bass. Panacea has been producing for a long time on Position Chrome with his early output being really nasty and mental (and quite good!) but recently (last couple years) it's been total garbage. Look for and Position Chrome releases before #22 or so and you'll be on the right track. Venetian Snares (Aaron Funk from Canada) is probably what you referred to as 'breakcore'. I don't have it yet, but I highly recommend "Songs About my Cats" on planet-mu. A very toned down V Snares release, but its still pretty nice. Audio samples on planet mu. DJ Scud is a key part of Ambush records, who plays and records drum n bass, hardcore, breakcore, etc (basically anything hard and loud). Check out him or anyone for that matter on Ambush. I like their material much more than your average loud and noisy underground label. Echo is definitely drum n bass and affiliated with Green label as Atomly mentioned. As far as I know, he only has 2 singles. Sinistar/Microdot (which I have) was released a few years back and Photogel/Drop Dead (on Phylum Recordings) which is his latest effort. He has also worked with other Bay Area dnb artists on a few singles, but I can't remember the alias' used, so I won't even try to guess. He seems to be pretty low key, even though his material is quite good and very original from most dnb. Hope this helps inform someone! Took me a while to type ;) joe. Same here, RDJ is what started it all for me, and it hasn't lost its touch yet if you ask me. AE's Incunabula got me hooked to them, but I can't really listen to that anymore, just as a comparison. np: Go Plastic (YOU SUCK YOU SUCK YOU SUCK - am I hearing that right?) That's because it was run off specially for me by my friend. Aaah. Well it is certainly drum'n'bassy, but the breakcore appelation comes from the fact that most of the tracks feature heavy distortion and digital grot, reminiscent of hardcore production techniques. Sort of like DnB meets scary gabber.

The tracks on my friends CD are certainly not toned down (or if they are, I'm scared of his noisy stuff!). I don't have the CD on hand right now, it includes 'Intense Demonic Attacks' and some other tracks in a similar style. My friend is going to see VS at the Fuck Parade, I'll try and persuade him to do a review.

Yes, this track was considerably cleaner than some of the others. Very tasty track, Sinistar. I hope he releases more stuff. I like this rough, vaguely junglish variant of DnB more than the lounge end of the genre. Thanks for the pointers. Anig Browl _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
