i'd never seen Autechre play live before so i decided to go see them last night at The Fridge in Brixton, London. so, where to start? the support dj's - Rob Hall and Russell Haswell. i'm not sure who was who, but to be quite honest whoever played before Team Doyobi and then inbetween Team Doyobi and Ae pretty much sucked. he played some painfully intense scream-core thrash metal, some mid-90's style acid house, some techno (i recognised a coupla tracks from Surgeon's "Pet 2000" ep), and i think a bit of idm/electronic type stuff. the 'mixing', and i use the term loosely, was woeful. technically appalling. i assume this was deliberate, that the 'point' is that there's no point and no feeling. i think Team Doyobi played for 45 mins or so. i kinda enjoyed their set, and heard enough to convince me to give their Skam ep another listen next time i see it in a store. their style seems to be that they get into a groove for 30 to 45 seconds, with some amazing crunchy hip-hop/electro beats, deep reverberating bass and nice abstract effects, but then in an instant completely toss it all away and go off on a tangent of random electronic glitches, squeals and squelches. Autechre... the first track they played was pretty cool, but from there on they went into electronic-squall territory, layers and layers of indescribable sound, which really isn't my cup of tea at all. frankly, i've found much of their recent material quite patchy - some of it is incredibly funky, emotional and soulful, but much of it is just far too clever by half and leaves me cold. the production skills and attention to detail i can appreciate, but where's the soul/funk/emotion? last night's set lacked all 3. to sum the evening up - it's all good, even when it isn't good. rob _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

the placidity of the crowd deserved this kind of treatment. i think the irregularity of the dj sets led up to the insanity of autechre's perfectly.

was very odd. the second track in particular built strongly, with intense layered structures. very strong impression that they weren't playing back sequences, but playing with the structures themselves. very exciting stuff. as the gig went on it got stranger and stranger, random elements taking over until by the end my head had submitted to complete disarray. the few punk rockers hanging around seemed the most in-place people there. judging by the tempo, it was dance music, and dancing to it was pretty amazing in itself, dancing 4:4 with random beats flying around you. but being london most people were shoe gazing or idol worshiping.

If I want a complete headfuck, I listen to certain IDM records. If I want emotion there are a million other things other than IDM to listen to. Along these lines, can anyone recommend some reltively tuneless records like Jamie Lidell, the new Electric Company, Phthalocyanine, etc. No I don't mean the experimental record where some guy bangs some cans together, but definitely low on melody and rough. Thanks. -Nathan

DAT Politics "Villiger" and "Tracto Flirt" Lesser "Gearhound" Pluramon "Bit Sand Riders" It's enough, I think :) These records are what you want. The problem is that for me they are full of emotions. I think the idea of emotion in any form of music is in the ear of the beholder. It's completely a matter of opinion (as is this post.. I realize there's some circular logic going on here but whatever) For some people, including me, the sound of 5 dot matrix printers whirring away asynchronously evokes an emotional response. Others get off emotionally to Bon Jovi or N-Sync. It's all relative. I'm not trying to say that someone's right and someone else is wrong, I'm just bored of studying so I'm using all of your mailboxes as an excuse to entertain myself. No offence. :) Doug --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
