Oh I love the IDM list, been reading it for the last year and posted 1 or two times but... there's something about it that just make me think there's something in common between "IDM" lovers. Seems like there's an obsession in "finding the latest *hot* shit", "find out how it was done." Why? No, pleeze, tell me :) All I want with music, is a element of ambience, fun moments and exciting noises. I dont think its that important to know how its done... Is it possible that IDM lovers are in a constant search of "being blown away" to then find a way to impress others? Oh well, i was just checking... Just thought I had to share my love for music, not machines. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

well, you have to realize that there is a strong musician presence on this list.... and if they didn't 'share their love for machines', you might not have any music to listen to ! plus, idm is a great genre because it's this sort of groovy academic/emotional hybrid. PRIDE motha .af.

personally, I like IDM (and a lot of other electronic music) because I liked the idea of someone sitting down at a computer and thinking/feeling their way through modern tools (i.e. new, non-historical tools with no sense of emotional softness) to create something beautiful. I mean, it's one thing to sit down at a piano and write a melody...the piano has a long history with a wealth of emotional moments. No one thinks of a piano as a tool...it's a beautiful instrument with a much-heralded history (okay, that's fluff, but you get the idea). A PC? Well, toss a couple of brand-spanking new software packages on there and hook it to a sampler...well, when it comes out, you've created something beautiful (whatever that is to your ears) from these tools that have no historical reference other than that which you've given them. Okay, you might say that the PC is starting to gather an emotional feel and maybe this metaphor isn't so accurate...well, probably true. But maybe that's also why I'm starting to bore of IDM...maybe this description is where I was three years ago... anyway...it's cool sometimes to know how it's done, but really, if it's good enough, your imagination never gets to that question. ---brian ------------------------ Brian W. Perhaps Carl Craig composed the tune "Neurotic Behavior" for compulsive idm types?? Speaking for myself, I don't really care how something is made. And whether it is new or old doesn't really matter, just as long as it's really good. Originality is important. I usually get annoyed when people try to sound like someone else, because they almost always do a piss poor job of it.

Agreed. Unless you want to start making music.

??? I haven't been blown away by anything in some time. A few pleasant surprises, but that's about it.

This reminds me of the following quote (which suggests quite a bit about why I listen to IDM): Karlheinz Stockhausen once told me -- we were in Copenhagen -- "I demand two things from a composer: invention and that he astonish me." John Cage in "Indeterminacy". I loose interest quickly when artists start to repeat themselves, and even more when someone else tries repeating for them. -Ed --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

This reminds me of the Morton Feldman anecdote of a conversation with Stockhausen (which suggests why the former's recordings dwarf the latter's in my personal record collection)- Stock asks Mort "what's yr secret?" to which M replies "I don't try to force anything." S, puzzled, says "not even a little bit?" -rob --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

you gotta remember that as a genre, IDM was media-fabricated for goatee-stroking, insecure guys who can't get laid and need some way to impress their friends. why do you think it's the music of choice for so many computer geeks? david ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jean-Patrice Remillard" <jeanpatrice@hotmail.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Tuesday, January 09, 2001 10:53 PM Subject: [idm] neurotic?

I do understand that there's a large part of users of this list that are musicians, I am one of those goatee guys, a bit geeky that got a few releases on some labels... but I'm not into trying to find out how other's music was done. I'm more into trying to find out how to bring the noises I have in my head to the world, which has nothing to do with pure MAX/MSP processing :) Anyway, each of us may find what he likes in music, it's all one's motto I guess.
