my cd-rom burner is being an absolute jackass right now and refuses to burn anything other than coasters ... i think it's actually a problem with the burner, not the media, but i was wondering if anybody knows what brands of CD-R media are best for burning audio files with the least amount of degredation/data loss/nastiness ... sorry for the lack of technical specifics, i suck. any replies appreciated. thanks josh -- String Theory : Digital Music for Humans http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Sadly, they seem to hit a point when they bum out and die. I found that the mirror ones (ie both sides shiny) are total crap. Avoid. Other than that, I've successfully used loads of different kinds and currently am favouring 80-min "Media Press" ones that come in slimline cases without ID cards. They seem to work well for me. I would recommend the Kodak CDR Gold Ultima but get Silver on Silver (as opposed to Gold on Gold) if you can find it. I buy mine at Fry's electronics - although I don't know where you're from and if they have them out there. They are much more expensive than the cheap blue on green CDR's - which you can usually buy for $20 a 50 pack but once you've lost enough data are burned enough coasters you soon learn the value of quality media. Anyone ever make a CDR of audio tracks and find out later on that they are unable to rip or copy it to another CDR? Cheap media. ----- Original Message ----- From: Josh Davison <yoshi@enteract.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Tuesday, December 19, 2000 10:07 AM Subject: [idm] [ot] best CD-Rs for Audio

I've had different CD burners over the past 6 years or so, my first was a 1x recorder from sony. I've burned probably about 400 discs since then, and have used all kinds of media from Sony to Taiyo Yuden. I have finally settled on using Imation brand 80-min discs for data, and unbranded Silver/Silver discs for audio, which can be purchased from http://www.cds.com/special.htm They are a little pricey (but not as bad as they were 6 years ago at $5 each) at 52 cents each, but well worth it if you're into long lasting, high quality duplication. (On that web page, look for the phrase "These are the discs everyone has been looking for. They're silver/silver on both sides. It looks just like a mass replicated disc. Can't tell the top from the bottom just looking at it! These are 80 min. discs.") Here's a few links that you should look at. They are pieces relating to your question. http://www.fadden.com/cdrfaq/faq04.html#[4-18] http://www.fadden.com/cdrfaq/faq07.html#[7] And the enitre CDR-FAQ can be found here. I've read it all the way through, and found it very enlightening: http://www.fadden.com/cdrfaq/ This is a technical paper that covers a lot of information: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~erick205/Papers/paper.html

This topic came up last month, and I was wondering if these silver/silver discs are available from any other places. Preferably ones which ship to places which aren't in the US. Thanks G-love. http://www.gram.org.uk
