Ok, flag genre stuff, but I can't think of a better subject line. I like things on labels like 2000 Black and Exceptional Records - people like Kirk De Giorgio in less techno mode, Dego's stuff etc. I think "nu jazz" is what I've heard this stuff described as, even though it seems more about funk and disco than anything particularly "jazz" to me... Anyway, I just wanna know if anyone can recommend some releases in this vein and/or tell me where to look to find recommends (mailing lists?). thanks, Michael np. All the shops in London now seem to be calling this style 'Broken beats' or 'West London'!, whatever it is I would suggest checking some of these out. First off the excellent Italian 'Archive' label, lots of releases from 2000 Black/Reinforced artists (such as Seiji/Domu/Dego). Lots of the releases have a much more Techno edge than a lot of the 2000 Black records. There is an amazing Future Beat Alliance 12" which is well worth the money, also the new Future beat Alliance 12" on Delsin picks up where the Archive 12" left off. Visions Inc, run by Alex Attis (used to be half of Gilles Petterson favourites Bel Air Project), has 2 stunning releases under the monikers of Plutonia and Mustang, fast paced (if you have them on 45rpm!) latin tinged tracks than are nothing short of amazing. Because its 8.30 in the morning, I cant be bothered to write much more, so here is a quick run down of other recommendations: Main Squeeze : bit more laid back, more jazz than techno, run by IG Culture DBLow : little 7" label also run by IG Culture, again jazzy, almost live sounding outings.. People : Well worth checking out, had a compilation out recently which is a good place to start, which features new and old tracks, including a Ian O'brien number. compilation is called 'People make the world go round' Cooperation : collective of most of the labels I have mentioned already, so far only one excellent compilation release 'Volume 1' which includes Nu Era (aka 4Hero in techno mode). Laws of Motion : Phil Asher and friends doing lots of nice things Skindeep : Total Science' (metalheadz, CIA) side line in more downtempo, techno tinged numbers... Goya Music seem to be the main distributor of most of the labels I have mentioned so check them out at: http://www.goyamusic.com , (although it hurts me to recommended them) Vinyl junkies in London seem to stock lots of this kind of sound (http://www.vinyl-junkies.co.uk), and smallfish (http://www.smallfish.co.uk) also stock quite a bit. Twoplayer has discographies for several of these labels and is at http://www.twoplayer.co.uk 'nu acid jazz' ? right I hope some of that makes sense.. :-) I thought that version of 'So What' was really redundant and odd. Ah well. Thank God it wasn't Ronny Jordan's version, is all I can say. Flanger are pretty damn exciting from a technical point of view... I can't suss out what's live and what's not any more on their latest. *shrug* Some really nice tunes, either way.

I dunno if I can describe what I mean, without just sounding like I mean "acid jazz". I don't think of it as acid jazz stuff, in that it's often got more punch and funk and so on... what I'm getting into often seems to be connected with Detroit sounds and so on. At least, I really like Kirk De Giorgio's more directly jazz influenced stuff (eg. As One's 'Planetary Folklore') and people like Dego seem to be into that Detroit sound, even if it's not the bulk of what they write. Actually, on the Dego tip, and in response to other comments in this thread, I really dislike all 4 Hero stuff I've heard.. (ie. released as 4 Hero) so I think there's a fine line somewhere out there. That last album they released was way too much of everything I hate about fusion. Why not listen to Return to Forever or someone (and cringe and gag just as much)? :-) The only tune I liked was the hip-hop one with Butterfly from Digable Planets (calling himself Ish?). Mind you, I guess the second disk was nothing like all of that, but I didn't like any of it still. D'oh. Anyway, thanks all for your comments. I have some places to look and things to suss out. cheers, Michael PS. "acid jazz" has to be the worst misnomer ever. A friend suggested "consumer jazz", which made me laugh plenty. Maybe "coffee table jazz" is appropriate as well. I always hoped Ornette Coleman's 'Tone Dialing' was him trying to create what he expected acid jazz to be, without having heard any. -+- Involve Records http://involve.co.nz Jet Jaguar MP3s (latest upload Nov2000) http://mp3.com/jetjag/ -+- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

yeah, i had the same reaction. the first one seemed to nod at a few different styles (dub and techno), but this new one is jazz. i think i'm more impressed by the "how'd they do that?" factor than the actual music.

late 4 Hero can only be described as an acquired taste. i agree that it's pretty damn silly at times, and i often get the feeling that they're overstepping their talent, i.e. their tunes should be better in order to justify a string section and all those black jazz/fusion/soul trappings. but when they're on, they're on. sometimes, though, i wish they'd just get to the point and stop showing us how well they've reined in all the elements. ------------ 1642 try 621 ------------ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
