Okay, once one aquires the ever-phatty record player, what are some good cartridges to pick up? Mind you, I know nothing about cartridges, how they present the music, and so on.. so be specific, eh? I've always liked Ortofons. But I have them on DJ tables (the blue ones) for back-cuing. For strictly home listening I don't know what I'd pick, as long as it wasn't one of the $35 audio-technicas from best buy. Haunt pawn shops and look for old school Hi Fi cartridges, and replace the needles. Your best bet is to try a few at a hi fi shop. It can be hellish good fun to go in and try out Cylob's Industrial Folk Songs on a $10K stereo, just to watch the look in the salesman's eyes. kent williams -- kent@avalon.net http://www.mp3.com/chaircrusher -- tunes http://www.live365.com/cgi-bin/directory.cgi?autostart=chaircrusher -- mix On Sat, 30 Sep 2000, wells wrote:

I went shopping with a friend for speakers (settled on a pair of Mission 771s) and the shop manager came out of his office to see what the hell was going on. Some people just don't seem to appreciate "Bucephalus Bouncing Ball" at 100W!! Think the exact phrase he used when returning to use office was "fucking students and their fucking music". Asshole. G-love. http://www.gram.org.uk

That's so funny cuz when I bought my CD player I went to this high-end audio place and did a lot of my testing with "Bucephalus Bouncing Ball", but the audiophile weirdos who work there were kind of into it. They were like "What do you call this kind of music ?" and we played it repeatedly and sometimes very loudly. I moved from Stanton 500AL's to Ortofon Nightclubs... man what a difference. I figure these will serve me for a couple years so 'why not?' For DJ stuff on 1200s, I also prefer the Orofons. Since I don't back-cue and scratch around much, I use a pair of the Night Clubs (yellow tips). For home listening, I would avoid the Audio Technicas, as they sound rather thin and screechy. If you can find one, even the lowest end Grado will run rings around the other cartridges in its price range. It's hard to describe - they just sound nice. Richard Hester Kent williams wrote:

Yeah, big up to Grado -- they are one of the only manufacturers I know where they put as much care into their cheap stuff as they do to their high end stuff. The Grado SR60 headphones are far and away the best sounding headphones for under $100. And they're made in the good old U S of A too -- lifetime guarantee! --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i'll vouch for the grados. i have a 40$ grado cartridge, and everything sounds very rich and full. most record shops (as in, shops that sell record players and supplies) should have a knowledgible staff and let you listen to things. it's usually best, if you're on a budget, to listen to what they have, and when you start noticing that they all sound the same, go with the cheapest one in that range :) cheers, /derek - - - - - - - "Extremism is no vice when God's on your side" -Opus the Penguin --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
