A joke that she was trying to get them to, or that I think it would be fun? Somewhere in some old UK music mag Aphex or someone else similarly Rephlex-y claimed that Madonna had been going to Rephresh for about three months, seriously trying Aphex to do a remix. This was probably in '98 or so. I'll start digging through my old magazines to try and find it when I have the time, if you're curious. I am - it sounds so ludicrous I almost doubt my memory. But I definitely think it would be fun, especially if they restrained themselves from just fucking the music up, which anyone can do (I think that makes AFX's version of "Devil's Haircut" pretty half-assed, myself - it would have been much cooler for him to do more HAB-style programming than just speeding up Beck's voice, which an old turntable can do) and decided to make a very interesting new version out of it, like when Paradinas remixed the Auteurs. I'll start hunting when I get back later tonight.... Ryan p.s. You're definitely right about "electronica" and Madonna, though - it started around Ray of Light. What exactly is the difference between electronic music and general and "electronica" - is it just that one is made to dance to, the other to listen to? The -onica has always left a horrible, prepackaged saccarine taste in my mouth as it tries to coalesce genres into one accessible thing. Not that that's news to anyone, of course 8^| ------- Andrei asked:

This is a joke, right ? Andrei --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

A joke in that I find it hard to believe she was hanging out at Rephresh nights or was even aware of them for that matter.

Sure.

That's pretty much it, but to me "electronica" represents that sort of middle of the road, "what exactly is this ?" crap like Crystal Method, Fatboy Slim, etc.. That sort of mid-tempo breakbeats with acid lines, rock masquerading as dance music garbage that was getting attention in the US at the height of "electronica's" success 2 or 3 years ago. Not that I was trying to say that's what influenced Madonna's music. I guess I was trying to say her music became more overtly electronic and went beyond just using average sort of synth stuff. You know what I mean. I read a Chris Cunningham interview in FACE magazine that he took Madonna to Rephlex and as soon as the DJ knew she was there, he played 'Like A Virgin'.... d.kearley@home.com www.mp3.com/kearley Great Electronic Music ----> Kearley and check the A3000 users Station: www.mp3.com/stations/a3000 ----- Original Message ----- From: <andrei@world.std.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Thursday, September 28, 2000 7:22 PM Subject: Re: [idm] Madawnna and Rephlex
