from a FIREXIT discussion with Markus Popp, 10.00 Oval plays in Columbus this Saturday, 10.30 http://www.firexit.com "I'm not so interested this interactive domain for the sake of it... Undoubtedly, of course I would immediately agree to work the coffee machine in the Sega Headquarters in Tokyo. I would, myself, I don't see myself so much in the position of being a multimedia artist, or even artist in general. I'm just making some experiences now in the art world, so to speak. I come from more of a university background, I don't have such a great interest in art at the moment at least, because so far it seems to be very overshadowed by economic factors and, uh, seems to suffer as mush as the music world or the electronic music domain where everything comes down to marketing and earning a good name and then being able to release anything just because of the signature appeal that the renowned artist has. That's why I admire video game programmers, the interesting ones... It's much more complex than a lot of things that are really receiving credit in the art world, or even interactive domain as long as it is marketed or received in the art world. So, there's no comparison, its kind of, video games are kind of overshadowed by this kind of "entertainment" tag, but I think that the most serious work is done exactly there, at least at the moment. And it has not been like that for a very long time, it's only been a few years since it has been that interesting of a field to watch. But so far, and at the moment, I'm more observing these things, and observing possibilities in that field, instead of the art world, per se. I'm interested in recording CDs. Because now, since Ovalprocess is kind of an autonomous environment, recording CDs becomes more and more interesting, because its much more compact and challenging and forces you to have a very concise and precise idea of what you do. It's a medium, just as I will experience over the next six weeks, it puts me in the position where I will meet real people in the real world at concerts, and undoubtedly there will not be very many people at these concerts, but still I think that maybe they will be interested and maybe I think they will get something interesting to listen to or consider. So, in one sentence, the CD is a very well introduced medium that is very effective in the sense that it can put you in touch with other people. It's a good kind of means, I guess. I should say that I am not interested in the internet in the current stage, because it's not so interesting to communicate with people for reaching the theoretically largest number of audience over the net by sending out sound files or exchanging sound file content or whatever kind of content, providing, like, an online version of Ovalprocess. As long as I have the possibility to work with people from other fields that teach me about factors in the real world, it's much more interesting to work with people from, like, fashion, than to do anything on the internet." --Markus Popp c.
