not a laptop or totally live performance but Did anyone catch Richie Hawtin's Decks/FX and a 909 tour? I heard him at Simon's in Gainesville, FL and was blown away. His djing is one thing but he had beats flying all over the room. all sorts of panning shuffling delays that would just chase each other into the corner then bounce back out...courtesy of a DP4 I think. He played/spun for like 7 hours. it was one of the best live/dj sets I've ever heard...any recordings I've heard of this tour just don't come close to what I heard on the spot. ----------

Richie played here (Iowa City) on that tour, and yeah, it was massive. I know my way around a 909 and the way he was caning it was great. And the setup we had, in a woodwalled ballroom with giant video screens made it even better. Since it was a university event there was no smoking which really made it even better. It wasn't hot and smokey -- imagine that! The sound by Scott Rexroat (http://www.rexroatsound.com/rex/introx.html) was phenomenal as well, and I'd recommend him to anyone who wants the best. Imagine your living room held 1200 people, and you could afford the best stereo money could buy -- it was like that. His cabinets wouldn't fit the freight elevators, so we slid them up the stairs on custom-built ramps. I felt like I was building the pyramids, especially when we had to clean and jerk 600lbs 8 feet in the air. In a group discussion before the show, Richie said that he wasn't really interested in recording those shows, because it seemed more special if you had to be there. Well, you had to be there ;-) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Just wanted to take a second and reaffirm this little thread about Richie's live performances. Though his recorded output, particularly the Plastikman albums, are wonderful, I think it's unfortunate most people base their schemas about this man on just his recordings. I've seen him a few times and think that his live performances far eclipse anything he's ever released. I've grown out of the hard minimal sound he champions in his sets, but I still go see him any chance I get just to witness the way he handles his sounds. The records themselves aren't even that important relative to the way he totally reshapes them with his mixing and effects. And the point Kent raised about his sound equipment being massive is a very important point. The traditional home stereo just wouldn't do Richie credit. There've been moments at his parties here in Detroit where I've been completely mesmerized by the way the sounds pan from one stack to the next as if I'm in some aural vortex. Amazing feeling... The point I'm getting at is that so many people judge artists by their canon of recorded work, but I think it's important to keep in mind that event he most sacred slab of vinyl cannot compare to what DJs such as Richie Hawtin create. It's as close to being tangible as music will ever get. Sitting alone in my bedroom listening to Eno's "On Land" or "Selected Ambient Works II" are magical moments (for me) but aren't quite as consuming as experiencing one of Richie's parties. So even if yr not into hard minimal techno, you should still go check this guy out on the current tour he's on. His track selection is of secondary importance to what he does with the records. ...Jason Birchmeier --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I dunno. I use a PC, but I'm kind of on my own wavelength. Kit Clayton and Rich Devine use Mac powerbooks. People like Vladislav Delay use Reaktor, which is cross platform. Biggest problem is that laptop audio blows. Maybe some day USB audio will be universally stable, but not today. kent williams -- kent@avalon.net http://www.mp3.com/chaircrusher -- tunes http://www.live365.com/cgi-bin/directory.cgi?autostart=chaircrusher -- mix On Tue, 19 Sep 2000, Thomas Berch wrote:

hi all... i just joined.. so hello! luke, one of my co-conspirators from the freight elevator quartet uses a G3 powerbook to run his custom MAX/DSP patches... same setup as Kit Clayton. in fact when he lost his laptop in a cab in NYC last year, he borrowed luke's for his show. we also use a mac for all our recording... with digital performer. this is sorta frustrating, since i'm a PC guy too, and haven't gotten as much time with stuff like cakewalk. we also use a mac for projections... btw, i don't think the IBooks don't have sound input, so they're right out. as for blowing audio. chris fahey sent me a post (i think from idm) about a PCMCIA audio card that ran something like $800 or so. looked pretty snazzy and claimed good things... btw, just a quick plug for the new album, becoming transparent, out october 3 from caipirinha -- so you can pick up a copy along with the new radiohead. the 12" vinyl EP has remixes by datach'i, thomas federspiel, and kit clayton. check the website for samples, reviews, and stuff. also some of our older, pre-label material is at http://mp3.com/feq ./paul ----------------------------- freight elevator quartet --- becoming transparent --- october 03, 2K --- www.fe4.com --- ----------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

luke uses the regular audio I/O on his G3... i haven't used my PC laptop for much recording at all. it's not the greatest, i think mainly due to a flaky plug (it's an otherwise good toshiba). ./paul --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
