I've never heard of Pelican Neck so I'm going to have to hunt around next time in MCR... Anyway, Oldham Street is the place - if you walk up from Picadilly [Square? - if you have the MC Tunes album there is an aerial shot of it] there is a small second hand place down some stairs on the right (I have no idea of the name) - pretty lo fi shop without a great deal of good items but worth a look if you have time... Across the way is Affleck's palace where there are 1 or 2 record stalls but nothing too great... Eastern Bloc used to be located there when I was a student, but there success went to their head and they now have a BIG shop on the other side of the street (plus I think the hat shop is theirs?) but it doesn't have the ambience of the old shop (and its normally filled with sorted white label kids)... Directly across the junction you have the essential stop, Vinyl Exchange. You can spend a day and a fortune in here and I've seen rarities like "Sounds of Machines...", Badly Drawn Boy EP1, Mask 400, etc etc in there at reasonable prices. Like Music and Video Exchange in London they start stuff priced high and lower the price with time, until it ends up in boxes under the racks at between 50p and 2.00. The downtempo and techno sections are particularly overflowing with great stuff! Upstairs although the cds are in very little order there's lots of dirt cheap cd singles. Further up on the right you have Fat City which is nice for hip hop, and directly opposite you have Picadilly (another one to have made a move!). The new equivalent of VE and you need to head right to the far back on the left where all the good stuff is held. Go back to the junction and on the corner across from VE a little way down is a wack second hand record store which is worth a 2 minute browse only. If you have a car its worth making the journey to Chorlton-cum-Hardy (a place name which cracks you up a lot when you're 13) - easiest way of finding it is head down Oxford Road (heading towards and past the University) and follow the road down (it becomes Wilmslow Road somewhere) through Rusholme (its where there are a hundred curry houses on each side of the road) into Fallowfield - past Owens Park and Oak House student residences (best pizza place in Manchester, Pizza Champion is on your right) on your left to a big junction with a pub that has been converted from a church (it has a new name but used to ne the Queen of Hearts) - turn right and follow that road down for about ten minutes and you come into Chorlton and in a small batch of shops on your right is King Bee Records, also a second hand record shop and you can find some interesting items in there. A little further up and round to the left is Bus Stop Records who specialise more towards funk, soul, hip hop - I've not checked their shop but I've bought stuff from their website and its always been in A1 condition... I'm sure I'm missing more but the main two are Picadilly Records and Vinyl Exchange - if you check there websites you should get some idea of what goes down! http://www.vinylexchange.co.uk http://www.piccadillyrecords.co.uk BABY DIDDY --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
