The obvious choice would be "Rewind"... it's his big novelty hit. Otherwise, "Lobster Tracks" (the latest release as far as I know) is quite slammin'... I thought Living in the 1980s was unspeakably awful. For really good 80's retro best check Adult and anything else on Ersatz Audio. Also I love Miss Kittin and The Hacker on Gigolo records - Frank Sinatra on International DJ Gigolos 2 and the Champagne! ep is marvellous. I have G.D. Luxxe - Submission which is good, it sounds like New Order. Even the title sounds like New Order. Fourteen Zero Zero by Console is also great. What else is good 80s style stuff? What're I-F like? I have their mix cd and that is great. It has a track by Alden Tyrell that I really like, is his other stuff that good? livin in the 80's and adult are hardly comparable, cylob was going for the cheese factor..more like 80's pop, whereas adult isn't about cheese, they're all about pumpin electro grooves. if you're gonna compare livin in the 80's to anything it would be better to compare it to a lot of ed dmx's material

see the thing is, why bother with trying to find currently produced stuff that sounds like 1980's music when there's plenty of really awesome 80's stuff already out there in the used bins at your local record shop? i mean i guess there's that late-90's "irony" factor but that got played out with all the gap ads in my opinion. my 80's favorites: Toto IV (home to 'Rosanna' and 'Africa') ... david paich is a synth monster. love it Michael Jackson's Thriller -- nothing ironic about it, this album is fantastic. listen to it again for the first time. and yes, i think it falls into IDM in a loose sense of the term Thomas Dolby -- She Blinded Me With Science. yow. extra props for the Kraftwerk nods in this one. I didn't think the reply was "silly". I think it was a good reminder to look back and give another listen to older stuff that helped shape and influence what we have now. I also agree that that stuff stands on it's own. you might want to check out the Electrophysix compilation, which was released last October I believe. I have forgotten the name of the label and the cd is loaned out right now, but it includes two tracks by Miss Kitten and the Hacker, one being Frank Sinatra (saw her spin last weekend- lovely, eclectic set but she neglected to whip out "People Are Still Having Sex" much to my disappoinment), as well as Dopplereffekt's "Porno Actress" and some other greats along the same vein. It's a good question. The answer's simple: Because IDM is a mailing list not a music genre. I've always appreciated the way this list can cover artists as diverse as Farmer's Manual and Autechre, two artists who absolutely do not belong in the same "genre" section of the record store but certainly belong on the IDM list.
