does anyone know of any club nights in nyc that would appeal to either an idm fan or a richie hawtin/jeff mills/surgeon fan (i.e. bangy, 4 to the floor techno)? or even techstep/hard drum and bass or underground hiphop? the one thing i cannot stand is diva house. or divas in general. not ever. oh, i also hate trance. anything to give me an excuse to convince my friends to go somewhere besides Twilo. anything. reply off list please. --- the humble abbott arthur purvis set his hand hereto --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Can anyone recommend any clubs/bars/lounges in NY that are semi-consistantly good and have somewhat of an IDM-type flavor? I need a change of scenery and was wondering if anybody knew of some places that I've not heard of. Good question. Been looking for same. Went to Izzy Bar Wednesday night for a pre-Thanksgiving outing. Friend of ex-girlfriend's was playing that night - Takuh X. Arrived at 11:30 pm or so... $5 cover. Upstairs, fairly generic house pumping for a fairly generic LES/Manhattan-ite crowd. Make our way downstairs... recognize the sounds of Plaid's remix from the 'Ko-Wrecktion' EP. Stairway opens to small lounge, somewhat packed. A suitable wall to stand against is found, and the IDM/blip-hop tunings continue. At 12pm, Takuya and his cohorts take the small stage. Takuya stands before two keyboards and sampler, to his side - a trumpet. Bass player and drummer take their positions and rhythm fills the air. Gradually, Takuya adds some more elements and the bass player begins a deep bass line, the drummer adding a hihat. Slowly, the bass line becomes more distinct and the drummer begins rolling off a chunky rhythm. At the peak, Takuh grabs his trumpet and sets the room to it's feet, jamming on the horn along to the uptempo drum and bass. Altogether, the ensemble played three songs, woven together well and full of melody and rhythm. A saxophone player joined in for one song. The entire performance was a real treat, as it has been ages since I have heard good 'drum & bass', and this being the first time I have seen it done live and improv'd... and including horns. These guys are really talented, and the addition of brass just adds some real flavor to what (IMHO) has become a farly flat genre. Anyway, to answer your question, if $5 isn't too much to pay, the flyer I picked up said that this goes down 'Wednesdays @ IZZY BAR'. I don't know if that means every Wednesday... but the flyer also lists DJs (I assume residency) Swingset and Sasha. It was definately enjoyable, and a great alternative to the some of the other 'IDM friendly' venues in NYC.
