Hmm, I think you must be pretty selective in the d&b you've been playing. That said, a lot of the Good Looking/Lookin' Good stuff is nice, I would think that quite a bit of this stuff would be to your liking. Check out Visions of Mars by Blame, a particular favourite of mine. Some drum n bass definitely does have some very nice lush melodies. Labels like Good Looking, Ascendant Groove, 720 Degrees, Creative Source, and some Moving Shadow, and Metalheadz releases. That's the thing I like about drum n bass there are so many different styles (Jazzy, funky, tech step, etc) There are alot more techno influenced tunes these days. I"M VERY SURPRISED that Use of Weapons (Mark Pritchard aka 1/2 of Global Communications, Jedi Knights, Reload, Link, etc) has been largerly ignored on this list. ESPECIALLY when he is such a well-respected IDM artist. The most recent release Use Of Weapons - Stan's Plan [Droppin' Science], the basslines totally sound like something Tom Jenkinson would do. In fact, I gave a mixed cd to Brock Suter (ex-idm list member) and he was totally convinced that it was a Tom Jenkinson tune when he heard it. Mark Pritchard is also doing an album with Danny Breaks, the project is called Vertigo. I expect that will be a great release!! Also, on the lush melodic dnb tip.....The PLAID remix of Studio Pressure (aka Photek) [Certificate 18] is a must have!!!!!!!!!! I was hoping Plaid would venture a little more in that territory for future releases. Oh well, I almost always dig all of their tunes and remixes. Thanks Will and Ross heres the thing: I dont even like D&B really, but I did notice this trait!( U R correct too, I dont listen to it much) Someone has recently did a D&B track and its smoking, SMOKING, I wished he'd say something..... I have heard the Gellab(hope thats right) track from Plaid and its nice, again I dont care for D&B, but U gotta like songs like that. What gives on this Use of Weapons, never heard of this disguise. But I do agree Will, Mark P. is no joke when it comes to diverse yet quality recordings. np): silence Hk! -----Original Message----- From: William Samuels [mailto:w_technoir@yahoo.com] Sent: Wednesday, April 26, 2000 12:57 PM To: Kelley Hackett; 'idm@hyperreal.org' Subject: Re: [idm] D&B/Lush Melodies --- Kelley Hackett <khackett@aba.iupui.edu> wrote:

Hi, You might want to check out Jake Mandell's little DnB excursion "Dlue Veacon' on Prime Deep. Also 'Current Value' put out a fantastic EP; superfast intricate breaks over a beautiful sad somewhat ambient underpinning, on 'Position Chrome' PC22. The track title for side A is Creative Robot. I highly recommend it. Amp Tek put out a nice 'weirdbeat' sounding track, also with a sad melodic undertow on their album Declassified on Eclectic [e002(EP)], which will also satisfy the IDMhead. Downpour's 'Windstorms broken microphones ep' on Drop beat might also do the trick if you like your breaks real chopped up. I would also recommend a lot of Christoph de Babalon's stuff, and of course early Tom Jenkinson. That's what immediately jumps to mind. Good luck with your hunt, it is also what I look for, but unfortunately I think it is a very small minority of what is being put out in that 'genre'. Regards, Christophe Ross Balmer wrote:

I know Use of Weapons has put out some very dubby sounding drum + bass on the Droppin' Science label before, which overall is a very high quality and diverse label. I'm coming from a different angle, so i know of Use of Weapons but not other projects by the same person. - cutups http://pbs.chemlab.org/skelo

Can't second this recommendation enough. His full length as Innervisions - _Slow Motion_ - will be right up your alley, Kelley. Some of his stuff on Metalheadz is a bit more rough and percussive, so you might want to check those releases later. But anything on Infrared, buy! There are two Use OF Weapons (Mark Pritchard) singles the first one was "Mojo Woman" and the second one was "Stan's Plan" Part of the reason you might not of heard about it is because Danny Breaks (the label owner) doesn't do interviews or really promote the label and it;s artists. He prefers to let the music talk for itself. The Vertigo project (which is Mark Pritchard & Danny Breaks) is set to release a few eps on Droppin' Science and then they are going to look for an album deal. The album is said to be a mixture of hip-hop, drum & bass, and some weird jazz type of stuff. Sounds very cool to me!! PS Danny Breaks just released the Beyonf Infinity ep, which is really good. It's a mix of dnb & trip hop. ===== SWOPE TRANSMISSIONS - Listen on KUCI.org every FRIDAY Evening 6-9pm (Pacific) ~ Playlists / Links / Sound Files ~ http://home.earthlink.net/~efrans/swope-transmissions "Drum n bass, Downtempo, Techno, Electro and much more." __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? quite 'lush' and sometimes a bit shyer (but always present), in fact the whole album is quite restrained and minimal. The breaks are superbly thought out, and the sounds are dry and sparse. Funkstorung did a remix of one of the lusher tracks; Henryk, which they bent completely beyond recognition. The original track is well worth the listen.
