what's the story on this guy? i just picked up one of his releases, _monotonprodukt07_, and it blew me away, especially considering it's from 1981. kinda like DAF vs porter ricks, good stuff. thanks. * #### a disturbance in a system. #### laerm. @voicenet.com ##:# It turns out that an eerie type of chaos can lurk just behind a facade of order - and yet, deep inside the chaos lurks an even eerier type of order. - Douglas Hostadter icq: 5562209

re: konrad becker/monoton monoton 07 is excellent. the insert in the lp mentions the other 6 releases. a graphic, a video, two casettes, an lp and a 7". i have the 7" which is along the line of 07. can anyone comment or know how to locate the others? Konrad Becker also appears on the excellent compilation- Q.E.D. - where i was first introduced to his music. The track, "Mutation-Waltz" is that sort of bouncy-robotic metallic synth reverb sequence with Becker's monoton vocals and early lo-fi drum machine. The vocals truly put this stuff in a certain period/era, but the instrumental parts are truly under rated and have been overlooked for years and do stand the test of time. someone does a radio show or runs some sort of site under the monoton moniker, but i doubt any connection. Does anyone have any other info on this guy? Is he still active in music? I'll trade liberally for this stuff.... david *+* laerm wrote:

You what?!?!?! You just picked this up!? How? Where? When? What? I've known people who would almost literally KILL for this release. Don't tell me it's been released on CD??? Anyway, Monoton (Konrad Backer) made some amazing avant-Basic Chanel-ish records before teaming up with DJ Dano (oh gawd) and going all gabber in the late eighties, early nineties. This one (MonotonProdukt 07) is his best - four sides worth of subsonic bass lines and bleeps, eerie, dreamy, funny, all great. Before this, there's a single album MonotonProdukt 02 (also from 1981; blue sleeve, similar in design to the black 07), with a similar sound, though a bit more simple. There's a 7" called 'Ich weiss nichts' (MonotonProdukt 03 - 1980), which is more krautrocky. His third album (no cat no., white sleeve) from 1989 has it's moments, but is nowhere near the genius of the earlier two. After that, I sort of lost track (& interest) - he made at least two singles with Dano, and did one track on a Mokum (uh oh) sampler or compilation called 'If answering machines could talk', which was okay if you played it 33 rpm instead of 45. All the missing MonotonProdukt numbers are most likely to be cassettes - if anyone has any of them, pleeeaaaaase let me know - I'd HAVE to hear them. Bye, Maarten

check out http://www.sra.at/sr/bands/243.htm - pretty minimal information, but it's something. i just recently picked up the cassetten-version of _monotonprodukt07_ and i quite like it (despite having to 're-mix' and re-eq it through my four track due to excessive cassette wear). amazingly ahead of it's time in use of implied rhythms, beautiful submerged analog tones, yes. DAF vs. porter ricks is an excellent description. my question is whether any of this material will be re-released... anyone know? in the meantime i'll have to find some sucker who owns a bunch of monoton releases and offer to trade hir my copy of mask300. tee hee.
