What's the difference between musicians who only release their work on mp3s and those who get pressed (on vinyl or plastic) ? (this is a question, not a joke set-up :) Really, how do you guys root through all the mp3s out there to find quality stuff, and is there stuff that's comprable to the music that gets pressed? It's overwhelming to hit mp3.com and see thousands of people putting up their tracks, but where to start, y'know? I tend to skip real audio stuff, because quite frankly, real player is a serious resource hog on my mac and basically can't run it in the background and do anything else (granted I'm only running a 200 MHz ppc, but still...). Maybe a year ago I was mailing some guy who was trying to set up a sort of mp3.com for electronic music, but it was very techno/house/d'n'b oriented towards dancefloor stuff and didn't really do it for me. Are there any sites like that out there for IDMish music (sounds like a project if the answer's no... :) -Gil (sorry to post content here :P --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Well, for starters... Mp3.com doesn't have an IDM genre... then again, who can agree what it really is :) Many people making IDM like music, are placing their tracks in: Electronica, Progressive Electronica, Experimental and Intelligent Techno. Tips? 1. the top 40 of electronic at mp3.com usually has very few tracks that REALLY shine - if you take a look, there's a lot of cheesy trance up at the top :( 2. Mp3.com search engine - the search engine on the site looks at several of bodies of text to determine what to display - one of these is the "Similar Artists" section on people's site's. If you search on "Squarepusher," you'll find several artists that list him as an influence - this way you can locate music which is similar to what you already like. 3. http://www.sonicwallpaper.com/listmembers_mp3.htm - this is a page on my site which lists all the IDM and AMB listmembers that are artists on Mp3.com - note: I did absolutely no filtering on this list, so I don't claim that all those on the list make quality tracks. But there are several. 4. Stations - mp3.com has stations now - so it's easier to come across new artists since these stations tend to have a dozen or so artists on each station. 5. Mp3.com Electronic BBoard - it's a strange place, but it's cool at times and always a good laugh - drop by there, and describe EXACTLY what you are looking for in terms of some tracks, and the artists will pop out of the woodwork and offer up links. Be sure to ask them to suggest artists other than themselves... 6. there is a guy on the Mp3.com BBoard called r\e - he is an IDM fan - you could ask him - he has been on the site for more than a year and tends to check out the various IDM artists on the site. Hope this helps - and lastly... :) I have LOADS of tracks up at mp3.com URLS are below, Sonic Wallpaper http://mp3.com/sonicwallpaper http://mp3.com/live http://sonicwallpaper.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? You might try my station on MP3.com, it's called "Arkham Sanitarium". It's a collection of about 30 tracks from various artists that I enjoy on the site. (BSP disclaimer - Only 4 of these 30 tracks are mine) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
