Aphrodite (= Gavin King) makes a sort of uplifting party jungle. It's pretty straightforward, and his last 5 or so 12"'s sound virtually the same, but it's great fun when played loud in a club (he did a DJ set at the DrumRhythm festival here in Amsterdam a week ago, and as far as I could tell he just played his own tracks for an hour and a half. The crowd loved it). Some tracks have - mostly sampled - vocals, there's quite a few gimmicky samples, and all feature those deep rolling basslines. The CD - which is already out AFAIK - is a good introduction, although several of my favourite tracks aren't on it (and it has one awful soul/jungle track). He's also the producer of several bootleg remixes - he did jungle versions of "Mission:Impossible", "No Diggity" and Luniz' "I got five on it", but they aren't featured on the CD. I don't know who Aphrodite is but doesn't Mickey Finn run the North/South label that put out the Pressure of Speech and Further lps a few years ago? Also didn't Finn do some co-production on some of the early Drum Club, Orbital and, more recently, System 7 releases? -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

You're thinking of Mickey Mann (aka Mr Mr Mann), at least on some points. He's credited as engineer on the brown album and is still part of Orbital's live crew, according to the "Satan Live" sleeve, and was one of the people in Pressure of Speech (along with one of Orbital's lighting techs, and others). (Hi Aphrodite makes cool jump-up stylee jungle. It's quite hard, yet it goes in a completely different direction than, say, the no u turn stuff. Lots of cut up vocal samples. I think I once spotted a mike p sample in one of his tracks, but I forgot where.
