Rather than respond to all the comments/questions about the Coldcut - Natural Rhythm video I thought I would post the original press release that we sent out with the Atomic Moog CD (which does in fact include the video on it). In response to "What came first, the video or the audio". They were both made at the same time with each format in mind. Hence the reason the song does not exist in any other place except with the video. 1. The Natural Rhythm piece on this CDplus The average pop video promo is saying nothing because the visuals have no connection to the music they are bolted onto. It's time for a new approach. It's also time for multimedia to undergo the same DIY revolution that music making underwent in the late 80s with the advent of sampling and sequencing technology. "Natural Rhythm" is an experiment by Coldcut/Hexstatic directed towards these statements. The "Natural Rhythm" piece has been constructed of samples from videos of the natural world, where the sampled sound and images are used simultaneously. These have been chopped, shaped, mixed and recompiled to produce a totally synchronised audiovisual piece. We believe that the use of correctly synchronised sound and vision could be a powerful technique for remixing human conciousness. This, of course, is not a new supposition, but technology allows it to be experimented on with fantastic new scope. Watch this space! A trilogy of videos using these techniques are included on this CD single and will be further explored on the upcoming Coldcut full length in 1997 (probably June). Coldcut/Hexstatic would like to give a shout out to video cutup originators like Steinski, EBN, Lucky People Centre and George Barber. Also large respect to those natural history film makers whose works have inspired this piece.

Anyone who wants to hear some great music sequenced to a beautiful nature movie should check out the Startled Insects' "Lifepulse" video (although I don't know if it's still available). Image and sound are not as closely cut together as in the Coldcut video (no kangaroos jumping to the beat), but the music was specifically composed for the film that was put together with the music in mind (or something) Maarten ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ongoing purge of my record collection at: http://xs4all.nl/~slavlab (and try some of my own noises while you're there) -------------------------------------------------------------------------
