Here is the list of names I received of women in idm/ambient/etc. I was most interested in women recording solo instrumental rather than vocals with a band. My impression was that there aren't any like Aphex Twin or Autechre, who just use machines to produce music. Now I know I'm not the only one. (I already knew that but it's nice to actually have the names!) Here's the list with as much information as I have. Please forgive any inaccuracies, I'm merely repeating what I received: Lisa Carbon (on Rephlex) Mira Calix (on Warp) Jan Hanford (on AD) Andrea Parker (on Mo Wax) Riz Mazlen (aka Small fish with spine and Neotropic) Sara Campbell (on the pc music label) Kelli Hand Marusha Chelsea Grin Nicolette SIL (from Finland on Sahko) Happy Rhodes (singer but did idm tracks on Aural Gratification compilations) Steps-Dis-Charge (featured on the Instinct compilation, Ambient Systems II) K Hand Saskia Sledgers (DJAX-UP-BEATS) Half of GTO/Tricky Disco (sadly deceased) Cosie Fan Tutti (from Chris & Cosey) Kymm Seranno (on Ersatz Audio) I got a few names of women singers in bands that have idm and ambient elements in their music. I think they are important but their contribution is different: the female singer of Loop Guru Bjork Sarah Peacock (Seefeel) Beth Gibbons (Portishead) Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance) Liz Fraser (Cocteau Twins) Kate Bush (one of the earliest users of the Fairlight) ...and there are many others, I'm sure Thanks for all the information, everyone. It was my impression Lisa Carbon is another name for Atom Heart, and not an actual person. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. No way man... and other man. Um, I have this theory that Lisa Carbon is indeed her own person. Beautiful dark skin and all. She lives in South America (Chile? I can't remeber dammit) and does reeeeeeally nice jazz-flavored salsa and meringue electronica. I'm not sure who exactly the `trio' or the `friends' consist of on her earlier (Pod) releases other than the obvious Uwe Schmidt, but the three on "Polyester" are Lisa, Uwe, and Pete. Uwe Schmidt does have connections here in Chile but it`s with someone called Dandy Jack who is very much male. He`s just done an album with Pete Namlook of Fax fame. They`re playing here later this month so maybe I`ll try and ask him about Lisa Carbon. Tim On Fri, 4 Oct 1996, Christopher Miller wrote:

I was under the impression that there was an original artist named Lisa Carbon somewhere but who has NO affiliation with electronic/techno. The Lisa Carbon and Friends and Lisa Carbon Trio are in fact Atom Heart/Atomu Shinzu/I/Lisigue Benthaus... among many other pseudonyms. _ -robert | |___ ____ ____ _____ | |_ \ / -__/ / _/ | _ \ __________ |_____/ \___\ |_| | |__/ / -studio- \ _________________________________ |_| http://icse1.ucsd.edu/~rcurlee/ \

Actually, SIL aka Susanne Brokesch is from Vienna, Austria, and has only released one 12" on Sahko (Tal-S, 1995, SAHKO-010). Don't forget Eva Lootsey, she has a single out on Prime in the Netherlands and will be releasing an album as well. If I'm not mistaken she was also a member of Exquisite Corpse (Kk), although I think due to legal battles that project will be no more. Tara Patterson (Autocreation) Miquette Giraudy (System 7) Nina Walsh (Sabrettes, one half of Slab) Lida Huzik (done loads of stuff with Beaumont Hannant) Lai (one half of Lamb) Annie Williams (if that's her name... done a single on R&S with Mark van Hoen) Beth Orton (sung with Chemicals & Two Lone Swordsmen) Billy Ray Martin (ex-Electribe 101, worked with Spooky, single on Apollo) one half of Exquisite Corpse (dunno her name) Wonder (Secret Knowledge) the singer of Morcheeba Martina Topley Bird (sings with Tricky) and I think Sabine of R&S deseves a honourable mention.<<<<<< Um...the singer of Morcheeba is Skye Edwards. If you know who all the rest of those people were, I'm really at a loss for how you could miss out on Skye's name; she is, after all, one of the best vocalists within this genre since Beth Gibson of Portishead.

I see, but then I don't like Morcheeba, so I had no easy way of knowing her name. Besides - one of the best vocalists within this genre since Beth Gibson... there haven't been very much others that sound so exactly like Portishead, have there? Maarten onnow: Amp - Sirenes

Hate to be prickly, but... Beth GIBBONS she also appears (more or less) on O'rang's _Herd of Instinct_, btw. as for finest IDM vocalist ... PINKIE MACLURE!!!! I've only managed to find the "Hedonistic" EP - a fantastic slice of what Pinkie calls 'Cabaret Electronica'. Remixes by Transglobal Communications, but the atmosphere is closer to Nearly God, Pram, and Laika than it is to TGC's usual ethnogrind. On Placebo, same label as Rollerskate Skinny. Not exactly a powerhouse of IDM activity. Has anyone ever found Maclure's _Favourite_ mini-LP/CD? I've had no luck even proving that it exists, aside from a mention in an old issue of THE LIZARD. Anyone willing to trade/sell or at least copy this? GuerillaGman2@sprynet.com
