This is probably not completely IDM-related, although their latest couple of releases might fit an extension of the IDM-axiom, but I'll ask you anyway: A reasonably reliable source has whispered in my ear that Coil has already released - or is about to release - a CD called "Black Light District". Now is this true? Please say it is...I haven't really been a huge fan up until very recently (some of their early efforts are just too barbaric), and this is entirely due to the Coil vs. Elph projects; I was completely spellbound by "Worship the Glitch", and can't wait for their next release to happen. Mail me privately if you have any info whatsoever, or, even better, if you've actually heard it (or keep it on the list if you think it's relevant). Thanks... /Oivind Idso/

Well, a Coil track was listed among someone's favorites (Autechre I think) on the Artificial Intelligence 1, so, I guess that's reason enough to include them on this list... at least, the "modern" Coil and Elph projects, as opposed to the early wiere stuff...

Yep, it's out definitely, has been for a couple weeks. I found it at my favorite indie shop (Amoeba in Berkeley), and if I can find something, well, anyone can. It's good, if you like the elph releases, on sort of the same lines, though the tracks are a bit more fleshed out and include the odd vocal bit (not just samples, but a couple sung lyrics courtesy of John Balance and Rose McDowell) on a couple of the tracks. No percussion whatsoever except for track three, which features a metallic clank sound like a press or something, with a lot of nice reverb a la SAWII, and drones upon drones upon drones. Some of the tracks remind me of Autechre tracks off "amber"... can't say why exactly, but they just do. They do cite Autechre in the "thanks a whole bunch" section of the strange liner notes (lots of warped photos that look like a morph of the band, a julia set, and some yellow canvas populate the cover/insert). Actually, come to think of it, track two has a kind of beat, as do many of the other tracks, it is just constructed out of water sounds (alot of the material on this album sounds as though it were composed form water sounds). I like it allright; it's not a Love's Secret Domain, that's for sure, but it is better than the elph full length. It has a feel that is very "wintry" I'd say, that seems to be the only way to really describe the album. Check it out but don't go out of your way for it. As far as Coil being "appropriate" for idm discussion, well, who cares... ANYTHING would be preferable to that infernal bootleg issue...

It is out (Eskaton #6 I think) and my local store should have enough copies of it to feed me and all my friends who practicaly worship coil. Coil's love secret domain's 'Further Back and Faster' is one of the most 'intelligent' dance tracks. Their kinda recent 'Protection' and 'The hills are alive' are undoubtly idm. Dunno, but somehow coil were always one step ahead... I have high expectations from this black light district... hope they won't shatter. snowjob@actcom.co.il The Morpheus Equation: Start + Middle + End = Sand

"The Snow" is one of my all time favorites. It and the Orb convinced me that DJ'ing was the best way to let other people in on the secret. P.S. The Elph project is plenty weird.
