I personally think "Via Nostra" is SE's weakest album. That's not to say it's crap -- there's some good stuff on there -- but it lacks the sort of cohesion that made "Kitchen" and "Present" (my favourite) so damn fine. "Via Nostra" just fills a bit too light and fluffy, with very little experimentation to speak of. Anyone curious about Sun Electric is better off checking out "Present". SE fans who haven't already nabbed "Via Nostra" may find a few tracks worthwhile. But then Thomas Fehlmann's "flowing:ninezeronineight" came out about the same time and is a much stronger release.

If you can remember the title, let me know. I know they recorded something with a female singer (Indigo?) back in the early 90s, although it only saw the light of day as a ZTT promo. I've actually still got their original "Turn On" ZTT promo from about 1991. Very strange and nothing like their R&S releases -- sounds a bit like early Shamen, only slightly more psychedelic. -- Mark Stevens http://www.headspin.clara.net/ http://pressx.cjb.net/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Ok, my take is that it's a really worthwhile release. In terms of experimentation (or divergence from earlier SE stuff) there're many more live sounding drum sounds, an entire absence of housey/four-to-the-floor numbers, and then they get some woman in playing dulcimer and providing vocals via a vocoder. I love that track. :) Rhythmically things get quite drum'n'bass-y. In some ways it reminded me of The characteristic melodies and big whooshing chords are all there in abundance. I would agree with Mark that 'Present' is still their strongest release to date, and that it's the consistency of mood that makes that release for me. For some reason I've always thought 'Via Nostra' sounds like Sun Electric trying to cover the kinds of sounds found on, say, a 'Future Sounds of Jazz' comp all by themselves.

It sounds to me like 'Present'. My copy has a cover with an edited photo of a young Asian woman, looking quite reminiscent of As One's 'Art of Prophecy' on Shield. Well, except it's predominantly pink, not white. Hmm, my copy of Present (UK edition) came in a white/brown sleeve, largely nondescript except for a few DR motifs. Inside this were two more sleeves for each piece of vinyl, with red/yellow lettering and more DR jiggery-pokery. -- Mark Stevens http://www.headspin.clara.net/ http://pressx.cjb.net/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
