This coming Friday 3rd November there will be a session by Alec Empire in the John Peel Show. Were the Autechre sessions exclusive to the show or were they from Tri Repetae or are they going to be released in the future? I got a 12" on Irdial a week ago from 'The Electric Family' and all 8 tracks claim to be made entirely on Mariopaint for the Super Famicon. Does anybody know the truth behind this? I find it hard to believe that the effects came from this gaming console. One of the tracks is unexpectedly groovy but they are all untitled. Thanks for your time, -Ed p.s. How are the Rephlex Rags coming along?

Yeah - Irdial got a collection of artists, moved them into isolated rooms or something and told them to come up with some sequences on MarioPaint. Its a neat idea - give everyone a basic set of sounds and a *basic* sequencer, isolate them and see what they come up with. Irdial had an advert in the NME which explained it if someone wants to re-print it here... There might also be some information at the Irdial Web site. I think they used some extra effects and things on the mixdown BTW.

The sessions are recorded specially for the program, but John Peel has some sort of agreement with "Strange Fruit Records", which means that a lot of the good sessions make it onto vinyl. Planet Dog released that lp with Banco, Eat Static and Timeshard, but usually it's left to SF, which is an indie label I think - although now they've changed distributors or something, which means different status, and a chance that the records might make it to America? Rob.

Guess what was posted to the Zappo list today? :) ---- Date: Mon, 30 Oct 1995 10:25:22 From: Irdial-Discs <irdial@irdialsys.win-uk.net> Subject: [ZAPPO 357] Whats happening at Irdial-Discs... Attention all Zappoids! Here is whats happening at Irdial-Discs! Released 30th October: 'MARIOPAINT' LP + DC Irdial discs is proud to present the first 3 releases of the new supergroup known asThe Electric Family. The members of this supergroup are scooped from the cream of the underground electronic music scene. The projects of The Electric Family are based on strict briefs; the complete opposite of the almost absolute freedom that is the norm in most Irdial-Discs recording projects. The brief for this first release was to use the Nintendo Super Famicom video game machine running the Mariopaint cartridge, and one studio effect to create a five minute track in four days or less. In addition to the LP brief, four members of The Electric Family were asked to come up with tracks for a 12inch ep, with the instruction that they must include sounds from the Mariopaint package, along with anything else they liked. Mariopaint is a fun painting package, that has an animation section a paint section and a triphonic music sequencer. The music sequencer is extremely basic and very simple to use, though it is not easy. There are 12 sounds available in the programme, each of which is represented by an icon. The sequencer has a maximum of 24 bars, so each of the 8 compositions on the Mariopaint LP had to be constructed from parhe finished works are brilliant, and each of the tracks are utterly individual. The participating members were not allowed to hear the other members work, so that unhygenic contamination could be avoided. Contributions from: Anthony Manning, Beautyon, Spy vs Spy, Ray Tracing, Mrs Mimi Majick, The Gas Man, Spacemole, 2007. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The CONET Project On-line Web to: http://www.ibmpcug.co.uk/~irdial/coneline.htm There you will find the web side of The CONET Project. At this page is a 100% complete recording of 'The Lincolnshire Poacher' one of the hundreds of unexplained and mysterious 'Numbers Stations' that are found all over the shortwave spectrum. thanks! ---- Cheers, Hans ____ _ _ ___ ___ __ ____ (_ _)( \/ )___ / _ \/ _ \ ___ /__\ ( _ \ Hans Veneman )( \ /(___)\_ /\_ /(___)/(__)\ )(_) ) tv99ad@xs4all.nl (__) \/ (_/ (_/ (__)(__)(____/ +31(0)320 235266 http://www.xs4all.nl/~tv99ad---------------------------------->
