yer, Oscillate wedding was a hoot ... at last I got to see Plaid live and they were awesome its much easier to dance to when you can watch the flashing lights on the 808 they did about an hour of new stuff, some with very strange time signatures. they also did wicked things with an Akai DD-1000 jog wheel that made me jealous ... i was pleased to see that someone still uses Dr.T's KCS software ... Higher Intelligence Agency played a blinder too, and are so much better live than on record. Their last track was outstanding, much more of a techno edge than before. The excuse for this knees-up was of course the nuptials of Sean (Autechre) and Chantal (Telepathic Fish / Warp) and so most of the UK's IDM posse showed up. ANYWAY I'm writing this cos I got something very interesting at the party ... it's a new ep from our old friend rdj it's called mashed potatoes and it is INCREDIBLE there are five tracks all at 161 bpm it's gonna be the most controversial record around! if you liked the mix on 'Redone' you're gonna freak for this! is it jungle? no. is it ambient? no i would say its very richard .... it's well up there with AB1, Didgeridoo, Quoth. that means ESSENTIAL! also compulsory - PLUG 3 yum yum and of course Plug 2 and Plug 1 SUBTROPIC is a big hit in the UK now for Reflective, maybe the first jungle import to really cross over ... certainly the first from California! AS ONE - Reflections on Reflections, a fantastic remix LP from Kirk Detroitio and his excellent chums Carl Craig, Balil, Russ Gabriel, Scanner etc ... DR ROCKET LP (Clear) double 10" from Wishmountain, from ambient to jungle to house and back ATTICA BLUES remixes on Mowax from Hawtin, Photek, Alex Reece ... actually all the jungle stuff on Mowax is totally spot on right now EXTREME POSSIBILITIES is the hot ambient LP right now with Jonah Sharpe, Pemberton John Tye, Paul Thomas, Voafose, Wagon Christ NAV KATZE LP is now out on vinyl for Black Dog, Afx fans - minus the Glob Comm mix ... BORN UNDER A RHYMING PLANET is our old friend Jamie Hodge and his newie on plus 8 is strangely brilliant and vice versa, nice one Jamie! check out any of these that you can find! morris -------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- GLOBAL CHILLAGE the new LP from IRRESISTIBLE FORCE out (USA) 31/5/95 --- --- WAVEFORM / NATURAL FREQUENCY remixes 12" out now on Astralwerks --- --- AURAL EXPANSION 12" - remixes by MMM out now on Crammed Discs --- --- --- --- check out A SITE FOR SORE EARS ..... the MMM WWW server --- --- --- --- http://www.southern.com/MMM/homepage.html (in the uk) --- --- http://www.mit.edu:8001/people/trellos/homepage.html (in the US) --- --------------------------------------------------------------------------

I do, though it's called Omega now. I'd really be curious to know if they use any of its algorithmic composing capabilities. It wouldn't suprise me at all, especially for some of the weirder rhythm tracks. Using algorithmic composers to create IDM (or is that AIDM?) makes a lot of sense to me on a philosophical level. Anyone else around here dabble with that kind of stuff? How about adding random events to MIDI sequences? You want less predictablity - remove the human from some of the decision making processes. Yeah, but you couldjust cut the end point of an individual track so that it will loop at a different number of bars than the other tracks, plus you couldcut the first track (determines default loop length) right from the get-go...make it 12 or 14 bars, or better yet, 28 bars, then program some funk beats in non 4/4 time sigs... sounds patternless to most non-musicians/casual listenners. Also, if you make the snares (in funk) come down with a little flam=late time by about 30(/240pqn) you get a more sincere r&b groove.
