To be honest, I like to think of it as being as much about dance music that's got a contemplative / introspective side to it as being about people who set out to make something in the IDM genre and can't be classified as anything else.
To which end, I'm currently rather liking Silkie's debut album - deep dubstep with a lot of the atmosphere of classic detroit techno or early IDM. Very nice.

i think idmers tend to glom onto certain artists regardless of genre, we
hear some house artist who has some kind of glitchy/dubby/weird new sound,
and we all decide, more or less totally by coincidence that guy is idm :)
sort of how idm music itself borrows from every genre, as fans we sort of
borrow artists from every genre into our 'idm' scene, soon they find
themselves surrounded/assimilated as their entire fanbase becomes idm-heads
