I don't want to pee on anyone's parade, but I found the DJ Food Solid Steel
album INCREDIBLY disappointing.
The mix that you speak of (Mirror In The Bathroom/Mask) is actually really
simplistic - it's a drum and bass track that has no discernable melodies in
it whatsoever, and thus is bound to sound pretty good with anything that
it's beat-matched with. What's more, there's a big spiel on the cover about
how one should 'not think for a second that this was made with just two
decks and a computer', which I think is a total and utter crock. Hell,
there's even a point in the mix where one record just stops and another
begins, which I find *really* lazy.
This would probably lead on to a good stream - what do you folks think makes
for good and bad DJing?
Myself, I like records to actually merge together both ryhthmically and
melodically, which is not that hard at all with a bit of effort. I think
that DJs have raw materials to work with, and have to present something
amazing with these limited resources, without having to resort to too much
trickery. Don't get me wrong, I'm not some 'Back to the land, away with ye
and your machines, Satan!' sort of guy, but I do like to see limited tools
used to their full effect before graduating to the next level of technology,
a level that is often superfluous.
Well, that's the 4-album deal with ninja down the tubes...
Wow, 2 posts in 2 days!
Cheers, folks. Please disagree to your hearts content.
