That's why I go see live shows. I like seeing the artists do their
thing. Twisting knobs and triggering samples can be a great show - when
Paradinas toured last fall, he brought tons of crazy gear and was
re-creating all this stuff real-time, and he was definitely keeping himself
busy. While, on the contrary, Vibert and Cole made good music but Vibert
was pretty boring, because he would let patterns and loops play for rather
long, just occasionally changing things around, so most of the time it was
more interesting to watch Mr. Cole play.
I don't think it's a matter of "showing off." I think it's a matter of at
least looking busy on stage. The audience came to see the performer *do*
stuff, or at least have some interaction. You said above that you'd like a
chance to meet most of the artists you go see live - I assume, then, that
you'd be a little bummed if you went to go see a show, and the artist was
behind a black curtain, concealing all his gear and everything else he did,
and then scurried off-stage afterwards. I know I'd be.
