Q: What do you mean by "intelligent techno"? Its always seemed such a
vague term..
A: It means the opposite of stupid hardcore. And of commercial dance music.
Ambient music and intelligent techno were always linked in my mind and
the audience largely overlaps. Intelligent techno has got to have more
function than just to be utilitarian dance music. It has to give you
something to listen to and be intrigued by. It has to work in the
doesmtic environment.
Q: So it has to be about more than getting off your face and dancing?
A: Hmmm...yes. If you wish. Certainly, it has another dimension to it.
More uses to it.
Q: Who are we talking about here?
A: Well, the same people I was pushing twelve months ago. Black Dog.
The Aphex Twin. Reload. They're all selling tens of thousands of
albums now. Also, you've got a new generation of people like mu-ziq,
Beaumont Hannant, Autechre, Ken Ishii. Every time these people make
music, they add something to the sum total of the techno experience.
