hey folkerdoos... i've been a semi-lurker on the list for awhile, if you're wondering how i am. today i went out and expended almost every cent i had on a bunch of new (to me at least) music. maybe later on i'll post some full reviews.. some mini-reviews for now: Sven Vath - Ritual of Life/Accident in Paradise (the remixes) ------------------------------------------------------------- this is an awfully long disc for a cd single (74 minutes, 12 tracks). i found a played-once copy in the used bins and got it for $3, but even at $6 or $7 it's well worth it. there are remixes by william orbit+spooky (very, very good mix of 'accident..'), spicelab (also both very good), as well as hardcore mixes by lenny dee and some other good stuff. buy it, cuz you probably will love at least 3 out of 12 mixes :) William Orbit - Water From A Vine Leaf (CD single) -------------------------------------------------- I have had the original strange cargo album for a long time now, and really enjoyed it. one of the tracks from that album, "Fire and Mercy" is included on this single, as well as "Dark Eyed Kid" from SC2 and three mixes of "Water from a vine leaf".. i like the new track alot, it's definitely one of the best tracks i've heard in a while (the underworld mix is probably my favorite).. i guess i shall have to buy the album now :) Opus III - "When You Made The Mountain" (CD single) --------------------------------------------------- i hesitate to put this in a post to IDM.. but it's just to say.. DON'T BUY IT! it's garbage, i should have known better :) Chapterhouse "Blood Music:" retranslated by Global Communication (cheap CD) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- A sticker on this says something like 60+ minutes of ambience by ex-aphex twin. yeah, whatever. anyway i really like this alot. can anyone tell me if the original chapterhouse stuff sounds anything like this quality ambient disc. it's cheap too - i picked it up for under $7 Future Sound Of London "Lifeforms" ---------------------------------- I'm listening to this now, so all i can do is give my first impressions: not terribly bad, but... the first track ("Cascade") is almost entirely drum loops from the X-Static Goldmine sample CD, probably the most-oversampled sampling CD available. the loops are good, but with the supposed talent of FSOL (i'm still not convinced these are the same guys who did "Papua New Guinea" :) you would think they could have at least resequenced the sounds into original loops. after this track it gets better (whatever track is currently playing is respectable at least) but i've heard an awful lot of these sounds before. this is definitely not on my "Wow, how'd they do that?" list. I don't see what the big deal about these guys is.. the amorph androg tracks i've heard sounded better than this though. i also have hear 'themes from vapourspace', instinct's 'chillout phase two' compilation and instinct's domestic release of 'rising high trance injection' but i have yet to listen to them.. stay tuned - DanN /~~~\ |~~~~\ |~~||~~~~~~| |~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| | o | | o || ||__ __| | DanN = moddan@vlad.bowker.com | \ / /~~~\ | / | | | | | t23@cyberspace.com | / \ | O || \ | | | | | Transmission 23 - FTZ - edrone | | O | \___/ | O || | | | |____________________________________| \___/ C O L L|____/E|__|C |__|T I V E \*\ \*\

The original "Blood Music" sounds completely different -- Global Communication maybe sampled 3 or 4 sounds from the original masters then went and made an all-new recording on their own. :) The original is good, if not stunning, shoegazer rock with pronounced dance influences. _Pentamerous Metamorphosis_, though, is a work of genius. ----------------------------------------------------------------- dave walker, detroit art services _ marmoset@msen.com freeke robot luv

I think the ex-aphex twin reference comes from the fact that Tom Middleton of Global Communications collaborated with RJ on his first analogue bubblebath under the name Schizophrenia. _______ (__,-, \ / /\ \ f l u i d <finger me for PGP key> /,_) \ \ flu'id (floo'-) (/ \\ brit@chopin.udel.edu :65 FD F9 9F F2 23 F8 CF: \) fluid@freezer.cns.udel.edu :80 9C 11 AA 9F 92 0D 27:

Good God this disc is astounding. After receiving it from Dave Walker (THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!) on Saturday, I fell asleep to the first two tracks and woke up to the third. #3 is _AMAZING_. Mountain Goat crossed with classic Twin type beats and sampled footsteps in time with the beat. With each subsequent release, Tom and Mark are rising to the top of my all time favorites. All I can say is that I want that new Global Communication album NOW.

What's the title and artist for track #3? The guys from Reload?? Mark Pritchard and Tom Middleton? They're on the AI2 compilation as Link, with a track called "Arcadian" -kc

Anyone else think the first couple of minutes of this track is *very* reminiscent of early Jarre? I thought I was listening to Oxygene with some Zoolook style vocal samples thrown in. Amazing. Blood music retranslation is excellent, but I can't find the Reload album anywhere. Time to go shopping in the big city... Mark Mark Dobie MS Windows? Linux and X!
