I'll admit that I'm no expert on the breakbeat style, but I have heard a lot of tapes of pirate radio stations in London that play jungle and breakbeat music. I'm not saying that it is all bad by any means. Some of it is great, and some of the good breakbeat DJs over there have skills that I could only dream of. But a lot of breakbeat that I've heard just consists of double-speed samples of Future Sound of London beat-loops and other rip-off type beats. As a general rule, any musical style that is original, innovative, creative, and sounds good, I will support, but any musical style that is characterized by stolen music, even if it does sound good, I'm not going to support very much. This is just a general rule, but I think that people that are creating new music (such as Orbital) deserve a lot more respect than those that rip-off established artists just to create a name for themselves. Peace, Luke

Well, I couldn't disagree with you more. (1) Maybe we've never heard the great breakbeat, because it took Orbital's unique insights to move the style into a golden age. (2) Maybe we've never heard the great Orbital, because it took the addition of the influence of breakbeat for them to reach their peak. (3) I'm certainly glad the Beatles didn't stick with "Twist and Shout" for ten years :-). (4) Some people say that rave/techno scene isn't as good as it used to be, or that techno music isn't as good as it was. IF SO, it looks to me like this Balkanization into many tiny little styles could be a big reason why. It's the worst possible thing for music and culture. respect, Ken Ken.Stuart@tigerteam.org --- * UniQWK v2.0 * The Windows Mail Reader / Tiger Team Buddhist Information Network / / Modem (510) 268-0102 info@tigerteam.org /
