On the same line as the Keyboard magazine article, is one in the UK mag "Future Music" (apologies if this has been mentioned before). It has one of the best interviews with Richard James that Ive read in recent times and talks about his customized gear to a fair degree. Also included are some nice pics and a surprisingly good discography. If your interested in the technology and technique behind this boy then you should definately take a look - it includes a pic of one his homemade thingies stamped with the afx logo and "Aphex Elec. Corp" :) Other highlights include his sound making process and how he built a sampler in school that "only sampled half the time, but made really good noises" Its definately worth a look - I picked it up for $7 at Tower Books In Philly. Assuming that you're asking if this is correct, the answer is yes. This track is listed in your discography as the same-titled R&S release RSUK-12. Outer Rhythm is merely the UK branch of R&S, hence the catalog id "RSUK." The confusing part here lies in that R&S usually keeps the Outer Rhythm logo too small to notice, so most assume that the label is R&S, and its not its UK sub-label. Hope this helps, Lee An

I always thought that Outer Rhythm was just the UK distributor, not actually a sub-label of R&S. You're probably right. The last Outer Rhythm release that I can remember is "Stella." The only strange thing is that I do have a Leftfield release from several years back on Outer Rhythm that has no mention of R&S on the record label or jacket. . . Lee

On Tue, 3 May 1994, Lee An and Simon were discussing Outer Rhythm and their relation to R&S. Outer Rhythm started as a sub-label of Rhythm King as did Warp when they started up. Rhythm King pressed the first RSW releases and was a dance sub-label of Mute. Mute dumped Rhythm King and Warp split as did Outer Rhythm (I believe). Outer Rhythm merely licensed some R&S hits (Energy Flash, Mentasm, Stella...) one release has some UK only mixes. It was called just Order To Dance (not to be confused with the R&S comp: In Order To Dance). Quite a good release with some great mixes by Joey Beltram of older R&S tunes (my favorite is a remix of Quest). After Outer Rhythm died they sprang up again as Inner Rhythm but are now defunct (I believe). Mute Corporation now has NovaMute, of course, and has no relation to the ever growing Warp (who BTW is in a feud with Renaat the R of R&S). Hows that for scene talk? I'd love to find more older Outer Rhythm and Rhythm King releases. I bought what I could find through Pinnacle but there simply isn't much out there. I have a great Nation 12 release, some Man Machine, Baby Ford, but am looking for more Leftfield. I have both DJUM DJUM. please e-mail your help. -robert

Nation 12? Isn't that the project that John Foxx (ex-Ultravox lead singer and later solo artist) is/was involved in? If that's the case, and it's all right to mention Old Farts (like Terry Riley) and All-Time Classic Albums (like "Storm The Studio"), then I simply can't help but put in an ObIDM plug for his 1980 release "Metamatic". Positively awesome minimalist atmospheric electro mood music. One of my Top Ten, that's for sure. Made Gary Numan look like the true fool he was ... Hmm. I secod your opinion about Metamatic. But: I really don't get it why Numan is so generally disliked (or actually hated sometimes). I think he did make some really good stuff in his early stages. For example the albums "Telekon", "I Assassin", "Pleasure Principle" and "Dance" all contain reasonable tracks. As a sidenote, I used to collect Numans records. They were easy on my wallet since you could often find them in bargain bins. :-) He may have been pretentious but it doesn't make his songs worthless, IMNSHO. Jouni Alkio AKA Aural Expansion

It's good to hear some talk of great early "techno" artists that seem to be known only to the tribal elders. The early Ultravox albums were bliss along with the first 2 Human League albums and the first 5 or so albums by the Simple Minds (believe it or not).
