Sorry Alan, had to do it.. First though, I am starting up a list for promoters and other people working in the scene to help build communication and trade tips on how to throw parties. Recently there has been a huge influx of promoters onto the net (YAY!) and I want to give them a forum to talk in without an overwhelming amount of mail on off topic subjects (boy, I am sounding hypocrytical just now). If you are interested, mail me at anarchy@eng.umd.edu. But be warned, I am limiting the membership of the list to people who are actively involved in throwing or helping to throw parties and/or people representing them (ie, the primary doesn't have a net account). Anyhow, I am sure alot of you know about the Registry service I am starting up. While I am not going to go into a full description of what it does (so you don't have to read it, I am already off subject as it is) I will explain it like this: I beleive information can help the scene so I want to get information on the widest assortment (geographically and stylistically) of DJs, PAs and others to as many people as possible so I am building a database of information on DJs, PAs, service providers, etc.. It is a for profit (or at least a not a losing money proposition) venture I charge the promoters for extensive contact information, or charge a fee for doing the contacting for them and provide limited informatio with a subscription to the service. There is no listing fee. This is only the start of the services to be provided, look for an 800 number with a geographic breakdown of parties, wider distribution of how to throw a party data, a newsletter, and other things I am forgetting because I am damned tired. I am going to include the DJ form after my .sig file, but their are seperate forms for Graphics Artists, Booth operators, Technicians, and PA acts. If you are interested, mail me back (anarchy@eng.umd.edu). Then you shouldn't be littering our email boxes with your crap. Not only does this have NOTHING to do with IDM, it is also a blatant abuse of the net. Post that shit one more time and I'm having a nice chat with your sysadmin, and I mean ANYWHERE, not just this list. So much for "FREElove".

Notifying sysadmins is totally unwarranted. Dan is not DIRECTLY making a profit through the net. His Registry is a collection of info FROM the net and is FREE to all who wish to register! His service, external from the net (I hope), is what he is charging for. It is perfectly fine to conduct an exchange of information over the net which may lead to profits indirectly. The net is being used by businesses everyday. The convenience of the net most likely assists in their business, thus making/increasing profits. If Dan is trying to pull promotors into an email list and ask them to buy his Registry list, then that may be abuse of the net... However, it possibly could be allowed, as long as it's by email (deals which make profit are exchanged through email all the time). So go read the net guidelines before making such rash posts, Pete. Usenet used to not be allowed for any sort of commercial posts, but I believe they have a section of newsgroups for that now. I don't think an email list or small services conducted by email is blatant abuse of the net. However, I do believe asking for money defeats the purpose of rave. Dan, why charge money? I understand if it's to cover your costs (breakeven), but try to be realistic - Do you think people will really go for it if it's not free? I mean, they probably already have adequate people, connections, and information. Would it be possible for you to do this for non-profit? That would make you legit on the net if you were to run into any difficulties. Lastly, a rave promotion email list would be great! There are already info lists such as SERAVES, MWRAVES, etc, but a list for discussion of the behind-the-scenes of rave promoting would be wonderful...and DJs and those who help out in any way can be a part and make connections with people, trade ideas, give suggestions on lights/sound/etc, and maybe even collaborate on events! That's my $.02 -djkc

So, maybe Dan needs to post his obviously DJ-oriented questionaire over on the bpm list?

Add bpm to that list, and hell, post it over on alt.rave. Its run its course here on idm, and you've probably got all the response you're going to get by now. Can we get on topic again? I have to agree with Pete here. Post it to alt.rave, where such things as this are easily killable. And I'd suggest for your own safety you get a .com account, so that you don't run across any nasty AUP's... Brian

They use the routing and gateways of the Net but it's not like they're posting to newsgroups of mailing lists.
