the following was lifted out of the Sunday NY Times article (3/13/94) BY Simon Reynolds, TECHNO WARS: A HOUSE DIVIDED OVER BEATS (PER MINUTE) "Right now, European and American dance floors are dominated by trance, which combines harsh, all-electronic textures and programmed drum- machine beats. Fast-paced, mantra-like and minimalist, trance can be exhilarating in a coldly compuslive sort of way, but it is often rather uniform and soul-less." tp>SIMON, you're coming in loud and clear. . .hit'em where it hurts continuing with the NY Times article. . . "Trance is an excuse for people to make a record with three notes in it that goes on for ages and doesn't have any feeling behind it," Mr. James complains." tp>RIGHT! and one final pop into the Times. . . "In truth, the most interesting music is being generated at the extremes of the rave scene. . . It's the middle zone that's least exciting, with its middlebrow quasi-spiritual pretensions, tepid beats and predictable electronic textures." tp>I think my bro Simon needs a big fat high five for that one. BAM! Not a bad offering from *the mainstream* press. Although, listing Mu-ZiQ as an ambient artist, Simon falls prey to the nasty press habit of name dropping. Simon Reynolds has long been one of my favorite critics; though not perfect, he comes very close indeed. It's rather refreshing to see that the NY Times is one of his newer outlets. He's got a great review of SAWII in a recent Melody Maker [it has the group Senser on the cover].

Ya, this guy Simon Reynolds is L-A-M-E! I don't think his definitions are right... he should NOT be using words like "trance" or "rave" or "ambient". I haven't heard u-ziQ yet, but I assume from you, Teep, that this guy is just plain FULL OF 5H!T.

^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^ I agree somewhat, but don't you think that if the music itself was really good, people wouldn't pay so much attention to the sounds that are being used to create the music? I mean - the guitar has been used for YEARS - and you don't really hear many people saying 'aww, that old guitar - it's dated..'. Darshan
