I have been told that there are a couple of groups out there that feature the didgeridoo in their music, and I'm trying to narrow down the choices so I can purchase something good. "TranceMission" is one, and "Lights in a Fat City" is the other group. (I know that AFX came out with something, but I don't like AFX... no offense). Can anyone comment on these groups and their albums specifically? I know "Lights in a Fat City" has at least two albums: "Somewhere" and "Sound Column". I'm looking for a didgeridoo album that is trancey and has a dance beat to it (kinda like Wm Orbit SC3, if you know what I mean-not too hard, and kinda spacey, but with a definite dance beat). Do any of these qualify? I really like the "Space-Time Continuum w/ Terence McKenna", especially the parts where he doesn't talk! Are either of these groups like STC? Are there any other groups like STC? Does STC have any other albums out that are like this one? (I have heard they're coming out with a new one in June) Any general comments about these groups and others are most welcome! I really appreciate the help with this. :) Thanks in advance, Don donpierr@netcom.com

This is unusual... both Lights in a Fat City albums are on City of Tribes records which can be found in any Tower Records world music section (but recently, Tower Music geeks have been grouping world music stuff with the techno).

Specifically, "The Sound of Australia"... to me, it's like Biosphere meets LiafC. Heavily effected Didjeridu playing with pretty minimal rhythm parts and very mellow melodic pads. There's also a double ablum of his that seems to be inspired by the Aboriginal culture (entitled "Dreamtime" or something to that effect... I'll be getting this soon, so if there's interest I'll post a review).
quoted 2 lines also orbital's "walk on" and now i hear they have aa remake of that one> also orbital's "walk on" and now i hear they have aa remake of that one > called "walk about"...the former features the digeridoo in samples...
I _love_ orbital. I HATE looped Didjeridu samples. It's ruins the purpose of the instrument... The Didjeridu is one of the most expressive instruments in the world (try playing one), and to simply loop a sound bite seems a waste to me.

Hmmmm, a distorted Didj. sounds strikingly similar to a 303 eh?

David Hudson is featured on "Sounds of Australia" and I believe can be heard on "Dreamtime". The didjeridu player on "Alien Dreamtime" is Stephen Kent who is 1/3rd of LiaFC, and is a MUCH better player than David Hudson. I hope I can one day play with his amazing varience. My best advice for anyone wanting to get into the Didjeridu is to buy the second LiaFC record "Somewhere". The last track still puts me in orbit (MMmmmmm, delayed Didj... wow). If it sparks further interest look into Steve Roach, Outback, and some recordings by the BBC. Hope that helped somewhat... Bryan C. "There's no way that thing is just a hollow tube!!!"

Trance Mission and Lights In A Fat City are both projects of Stephen Kent, digeridoo player. LiaFC's album "Somewhere" is *fantastic*. Just digeridoo, percussion and weird atmospheric effects. Quite alien sounding and absolutely outstanding. It will trance you to another dimension. I'm not so wild about Trance Mission - their stuff is a little too folky/currenty/world-musicky, if you know what I mean. It sounds like it was made for style conscious yuppies. There are a few good tracks, but overall I don't care for it and I rarely play it.

no.

i think a better question to ask is "what groups have STC ripped off"? because i don't think STC are too terribly original. basically they remind me of all the english IDM bands... jonah used to have a huge black dog fixation, i wonder if he's over it now... /jon

Steve Roach - there's a jazz drummer by the same name. I assume it isn't the same guy, unless he's really wandered off since his hard bop days. Also, there's been a didgeridoo thread on alt.music.world that might be helpful. Trancemission was mentioned, but the focus has been on more world-musicky stuff - as you might have guessed :) abulafia "I am what I am, that is a tribal man" danjlav@midway.uchicago.edu - Q-Tip

Sorry to quote myself, but I just remembered the drummer's name is Max Roach (been a while since I've listened to much jazz). Silly me :P Who is Steve Roach? And I still recommend the didgeridoo thread on alt.music.world :) abulafia "I am what I am, that is a tribal man" danjlav@midway.uchicago.edu - Q-Tip

I've got a long, thin cardboard tube (the kind you get big rolls of material on) which sounds fine. Circular breathing is another story...... I only ever heard a snatch of Lights In A Fat City : Somewhere it was REALLY cool and is availiable from the Club Dog mail order service. If you can find them. I've got the address somewhere : if anybody is interested please let me know. Also from them comes Simple Harmonic Motion : about an hour of layered didgeridoos : this record cured me after years of Didg fixation : it's Cyrung from Tribal Drift. Don Gray : I agree about "Evil is Even" and that the best Shamen stuff was with Will Sin, Phorwards -> Apparently the next Shamen album is instrumental, but I'm saying nowt until I hear it. How many different versions of En-tact are there....? I have a single LP UK release, and I've seen the US CD.... Are there two different UK releases, then....? Incidentally, has anyone else noticed that the artwork on the cover is such that (with a little imagination) you can read the title En-tact as Ex-tacy. And the drug ecstasy is in fact an entactogen.... Cosmic

I wuold appreciate it if people would stop crossposting non-KLF/Orb threads to the KLF/Orb list. Crossposting between mailing lists is risky at best, and continuing the crosspost once the topic starts wandering is just plain rude. -- Lazlo (lazlo@unm.edu)
