trying to get my hands on a vinyl copy of Air Liquide's latest 'Nephology'. A limited run of 500 on clear vinyl- includes a 12" and a 2 track 7"- the CD i can get its the *VINYL* i need......Any one able to find one for me?......I listened to bits of it and seemed darn fine to me, right in there w/ my aqueous tendencies....the girl who does the spoken word on their albums has THE most amazingly rapturing voice...the instant the words poured out of my cd saying "this is not a mind trip, this is a body journey...journey...journey...journey...." i was totally transfixed. I've only seen, and purchased a single CD full length called 'Liquid Air' suprisingly, last summer....I've heard rumors of a double CD version of this album????? Any remixes anyone knows of? If you liked the Terrence Mckenna sampled track on 'dreamfish'(all knowing male deity one) then check Air Liquide... I've never heard them mentioned before(alas i only discovered this list a couple of months back)so i'll venture into some sort of review.... its a very strange mix of sounds and speeds... the best tracks to me are 1, 2, 10.... No.1 is a short bit with a hiker explaining his encounters w/ bigfoot and ufo's, wafting synth lines in bkgrnd, grreat sample.... No.2 lives up to the group's name....floating in a rhythmic sea of bass, definite trance...all i can describe it as is the sound of the dark almost still water in the very depths of our ocean, stirred ever so slightly by the ethers, absolutely beautiful... No.10 is the best on the CD(those of you who live in Canada, its availiable on Chris Sheppards Techno Trip 4<gasp>) - the original mix of 'liquid air'-starts w/ that star infested voice leading you into an 8 minute trip of the 'senses'.... however i've never received more mental imaging from another track as of yet(waiting for The 25th in SF)...perfect reverb on her voice... feeling high strung- pop this in and close those eyes...the 303 starts in softly and then lifts you away..still gets my vote for best use of that little box....the voice returns to bring you back into a functionable state...talks of bodies and minds fusing...'there is no other reality but our own, where does my body end and yours begin....'...can't talk about it enough. The rest of the Cd is a mix of reeeeally strange ambience, and 2 faster skippable tracks imho. The ambient ones go heavily into screwing w/ an effects processor-telephone rings, some guy that likes plants and an plug for entertainment tonight.....high wierdness but overall the cd flows end to end, definitely worth whatever you have to pay for it(+ if you buy vinyl you get it on nifty blue marble)... This talk about Mckenna and STC has led me to reinforce an old point Go forth and buy the 'fluresence' EP,and alien community (jonah sharp/petenamlook) once you've heard the first track on the hologram side of 'fluresence', you'll be hooked......availiable @ Gaia Mantra Records (mantra@netcom.com)in SF...any questions regarding STC ask them, i guarantee they'll know hmmmmmmmm....if you vist SF check the holographic wallpaper, my, my, my.... anyone picked up Beaumont Hannant's full length 'basic data manipualtion', my friends can't stop talking about. They keep telling me its the best thing they've heard in a loooong time- its the future they say.....i still have yet to hear it.... and to the guy in norway your copy of 'tango n'vectif' will be dubbed and sent tomorrow....... ddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddreammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm ________________________________________q_________r_____i___s_______/ qris blohm(kblohm@cln.etc.bc.ca)

That track on C. Shepperd's compilation is really cool musically, but the lyrics that precede the cool 303 sounds etc.. are just garbage. I think that this might lead somewhere discussion wise... How many people see a major place for lyrics in IDM? I myself find that when tracks like this one (air liquide) come out, they are tarnished by pretentious lyrics. There aren't too many ways to tell someone to 'lose themselves in the music', and we all do that anyways... Dub-iously yours, Neal.

well if his mixing is better than his music making then his music must be really bad becuase his mixing is crap. Most of the time the guy is too drug-phuqed to match two beats together. I've been hearing him spin off and on since the eighties and more times than not, he just mixes in the next track during an ambient break or the end of a track. I've heard Sven Vath do this but at least Sven has a better selection of tracks. Don't mean to sound flameish but I'm sick of hearing Keoki hype. Yes he's been around for a long time but that doesn't necessarily mean he's good. Basically he has a bunch of club kids who follow him around anywhere he goes because of his 'fabulous' attitude. These kids could probably care less and know even less about the music. will

It makes me sick hearing about these "big name" musicians who can't even *play* _real_ instruments... C'mon, I thought we demolished the olden ideas about "skill" and technique about the time that the Sex Pistols killed off ELP... I played a couple of gigs in NY last year with Keoki. He's a nice enough guy. Pretty personable. Once he and Julie Jules (editor of that club kid zine Project X) were so whacked out on whatever that they danced, yes DANCED, on my records. They had knocked a couple out of my bag and didn't notice while they continued to shake it on my vinyl. I guess they liked my groove but that's no excuse to scratch up out of print rarities. He said that he would give me something in return but I never heard from him. The real problem with his style is that he'll play anything just to be a superstar. I tend to like DJ's who want to educate the crowd or who stick to a distinctive style. Keoki will play all over the place in one night. Anyway this is starting to sound like an .alt.raves posting so I'll quit. -robert

Well, I heard him spin at 2008 in St. Louis last month, not knowing *anything* about him other than that he was a popular DJ from the Limelight in NYC, and I thought he did a *great* job. Cool-ish proggy-house (by _no_ means one of my preferred styles), spun well with careful attention paid to set-sequencing. One of the promoters was talking about how, unlike most out-of-town jocks, he arrived early and helped them work on the sound, and how he stayed around the next morning spinning at the after party for free... I agree. Two great disks from a band that imo sometimes hits it right on and sometimes falls a bit short of the mark. The ambient parts on the first cd are nice droney bits with a bit of knob twiddling (almost excessive). Some really dark trancey stuff here as well. The second cd is a bit sharper sounding with some nice 303 lines and some great, hard dance tunes. There's also a remix of liquid air on the second disk but unfortunately i got mine in the mail and the cd was cracked, screwing up the first few songs. As far as i know there is no vinyl release as yet but i might be wrong. I don't know about the claim (by SPIN or some other mag) that they are the worlds first electronic super group (if any one deserves that title it'd have to be orbital-but who would want that title anyhow) but there's definitely some worthwhile tracks on here. While i'm here i might as well mention a couple other worthy tracks i picked up last week: DBX: Losing control, spocks brain etc-another great release by dan bell. Detroit minimal house at its finest. Losing control is a totally stripped down track with a repeated sample saying 'losing control' while it is fed through some sort of analog filter. Very cool Coil vs the eschaton-two tracks. The first is a remix of nasa arab from stolen and contaminated soundtracks. The second is a new song called 'first dark ride' (i think thats what it is). This starts out with some nice concretesque soundscapes and builds into this wicked little bit of trance. Recorded in 'sidereal sound' for your listening pleasure ;) If this is any indication of the new album that's due soon, i can't wait! If you do see it, get it, since its a world serpent release and likely a limited edition. karl

I suspect it has something to do with placement in the stereo field for a 3d type effect. I could be wrong... The reason i say this is if you listen to the single with headphones there's some really wild movements that the sounds seem to go through. Maybe someone else has a more technical explanation? karl

Sm:le had for sure problem to concentrate. This double-pack can be a "must have" for any Air Liquide fan because of the 60 mn of unreleased or new version tracks BUt why they reduce th impact of new tracks with quite old released tracks. "Ek-Stasis" is Air Liquide at its best. ********************************************************************** Eric "Aleph6" *********************************************************************

second this. the cd is called 'let the magic flow' (i think) by Deluxe (Jeff Taylor). this album is fantastic, ranging from acid house to ambient and good techno...i listened to a friend's copy of this for about a week straight, if you can find this (it's on Ultraviolet records) pick it up, it's definitely worth it. mikebee

I can assure you; it is not a Public Enemy sample. The sample is from Holy Noise's `The Noise', released by XL Records in 1991 (or from the original source, of which I have no clue whatsoever). Holy Noise's `The Noise can be found as a separate 12" and on XL's compilation `The Second Chapter - Hardcore European Dance Music' (XLLP-108, 1991). ObTrainSpot: Did you notice that LFO has sampled The Orb's `Assassin' on `Tied Up'? Listen carefully to the original `Tied Up'! ObTrainSpotToo: The sample `Can you imagine... an Extra-Terrestial Disc- Jockey? It was like ... listening to radiowaves from space ... it was unbelievable!' on Biosphere's `Seti Project' is from a movie called `Space Camp' (1986). A spiffy flick where a group of kids are sent to orbit in a shuttle; the sample originates from a girl who remebers everything she reads :-) Another day in the life of... -- ::: Nuutti `Gordon' Meril{inen - Shaper/Mechanist ::: ::: <gordon@otax.tky.hut.fi> <gordon@sata.fi> ::: ::: Finger either address for more information. :::

Is "The Increasing Difficulty of Concentration"[smile] a compilation of Uk eps and lps (is Nephology on there?) or is it new material? I was never able to pin down an import, and I'm also shocked that nobody has talked about this release, to my knowledge at least. It's very brilliant. Absolutelywonderful. Definitely a must have, unless you have the original UK releases...mmmmm-mmmmm good.....has he remixed any stuff? Is there a discography somewhere? Best regards, J

Does anyone know the real tracklist for Nephology-cd (single)? Mine has 12 tracks, but sleeve says 14. About that Air Liquide-tank. I saw Air Liquide-company (i think they are manufacturing chemicals) in south-Berlin last summer when I was travelling to south.

[Apologies for those of you out there that receive two copies of this....DM] Leave it to Best Buy to dump Air Liquide in with New Age. I found _The Increased Difficulty of Concentration_ over the weekend (along with the Fax II comp) for $12.99 - and that's for two discs! I can't recall if much has been said about AL in the past on either list, but this is one fantastic recording. More sample driven than recent Orb stuff, but still in the same vein of discourse backed w/ underlying beat and beatless music, _Concentration_ chills, trances, and dances with the best stuff out there. Use the Orb as a reference point, but Air Liquide is more focused and a bit less goofy. :-) On Sm:)e - find it today! I found the Air Liquide disc for $11.99 in the new town that I moved to. All Subharmonic releases are 11.99 and Instinct are 12.99. Anyway, I really enjoy this 2CD set too. The female vocalist wears a bit thin a times ("This is not a mind trip. This is a body trip"), but overall some very nice themes. ____________________________________________________________________________ Paul Rafanello ambience@delphi.com "We learn to love and when we learn to give." ____________________________________________________________________________
