Actually, anybody remember the Orb's 40-minute Blue Room? Over the first
15-or-so minutes it does exactly this, building slowly to finally encompass
a very danceable beat. Everything fits in very nicely. However, what it
does after this sort of drags everything out. Anyway, a successful example
from more than a year ago.
Personally, I think the "next big thing" will be further refinement of the
microscopic levels, such as more "organic" sounds and increasing
compositional complexity. Especially since the most basic stuff can almost
be generated algorithmically - if this becomes commonplace, this will free
more energy for other developments, stuff you can layer over the algorithms.
