Actually, anybody remember the Orb's 40-minute Blue Room? Over the first 15-or-so minutes it does exactly this, building slowly to finally encompass a very danceable beat. Everything fits in very nicely. However, what it does after this sort of drags everything out. Anyway, a successful example from more than a year ago. Personally, I think the "next big thing" will be further refinement of the microscopic levels, such as more "organic" sounds and increasing compositional complexity. Especially since the most basic stuff can almost be generated algorithmically - if this becomes commonplace, this will free more energy for other developments, stuff you can layer over the algorithms.
