'Otaku' does mean home or household. Maybe this formal 'you' you are
talking about is 'otoko' which means man or men, and somehow has become
used in a subjective form. Afterall, we Americans say "man" a lot, like
"Hey, man," or "Man, I wish I could go!" Who knows?
