Actually, I'd really like to know. I hear all of these great remixes of an artist and wonder how they tweak/separate vocals and whatnot from the rest of the track to modify. I can see how if an artist asks another specifically to remix his/her track that they probably will offer the original multitrack mix. But, how about those white label artists and others who seemingly tweak individual sounds apart from another on their offered remixes? Thanks!

There are a bunch of ways.....but what you're leaning towards sounds like you'd need the multi-track session from the producer of the track. Unless there's an isolated section of the song you're interested in remixing, with vocals by themselves, it isn't easy to make sound good. Some software (for cheap karaoke stuff) exists that allow you to pick out the the eq range that most vox rests in, and to some degree you can either get rid of or isolate the vocals enough to work with it. It may sound kind of tinny, but another way, is to use Live, and put a heavy high-pass filter on the track. It'll allow you to at least put different types of beats underneath everything. It won't be easy to change keys though if you want to drastically change the melody underneath it.----Nate On Jan 6, 2009, at 12:19 AM, wownflutter wrote:

Usually it's done with an a capella of the vocal which is provided by the artist or the label. Sometimes an artist will provide the a capella in an EP release (often on vinyl) You can also extract a n a capella of a track if you have the instrumental by inverting the wav - but only if it's exact.
