So I've been busy and distracted and haven't kept up with much going on in the IDM world - or even the broader music world - for, well, probably a couple years would be the honest thing to say. And I have two questions: 1) I have a new Brit friend with whom I'd like to share some good electronic music, whose response to such things is usually: "electronic music? blech." I think he just hasn't heard much beyond pop house & techno. Also he's exaggerating a bit. But anyway. He has really broad musical tastes but tends to prefer alt rock/metal, some I know & some I'm just getting into now through him: Evanescence, Nightwish, Iron Maiden, Rasputina, The Dresden Dolls, as well as classic Zeppelin, Queen, Bowie, ACDC, Pink Floyd etc. So... what IDM/electronic would you think to share? My first thoughts are dark Proem and Venetian Snares' "Rossz..." album, maybe some Autechre of some kind, but... I feel also wrong & lost. 2) I'm just looking for recommendations for myself. What's been going on lately? What's the good new music? Doesn't have to be just IDM, and though I'm about to bore you with a short list of what I do like, it doesn't necessarily have to match that, I'm open. I can say it shouldn't really be the old Warp standards (Sqpshr & Ae jump to mind) as I *have* heard their last couple albums and don't really care for it anymore. So you can jump right into generously helping me out ;) based on that, or wade on through my shortlist of likes: Recently enjoyed: Venetian Snares (only Rossz album, rest not so fond of), The Tuss, Yagya, Secede, o9, Secret Frequency Crew, NIN Year Zero & remixes, Zoe Keating... Favorites from the past couple years, including all their old stuff: most from Merck Records (not so much Helios, Tiki Obmar, Tycho, Lateduster, 40 Winks), Bola, Proem (can't wait for his next), Funckarma/Quench/etc., Lackluster, Blamstrain, Saint Etienne, Jimi Tenor, Plaid, Amon Tobin Also a fan of tons of other stuff, Scissor Sisters, Roisin Murphy, Rasputina, Cake, cold techno (recent Monolake, Narita), house (from Daft Punk to Basement Jaxx to Fierce Angel), dnb (covert ops & fokuz are cool), 1990s Autechre, B12... I must also admit a weakness for Nuglah on youtube and also the "it's ok 2 b gay" video there, among other things. I'm a pretty shallow individual. Thanks for any suggestions I reap. Feel free to turn this into an early "best of 2008" thread as well. Nice list, here's some other (mostly) hard (mostly) new good stuff: -Haswell and Hecker, the record for Warp (UPIC Tracks) is alot more playful than the Blackest Ever Black lp, both are unbelievable -Pulse Emitter, excellent modular synth noise stuff, upfront, lo-fi, quality -Electromeca ep on Deathsucker, hip hop tempo breakcore that actually grooves, brutal fun -Distance, that dubstep guy, has done a few tracks of serious lushness lately that should appeal to idmers. Vaccine too. -Andy Stott is going good, if somewhat predictable, dub techno on the Modern Love label. That track Rise is bomb -agreed, the Basic Channel reissues are indeed crucial -Fe-mail, "Blixter Toad" is no joke, seriously advanced noise for the new millenium -Electronic Explorations and Resident Advisor have been good for podcasts, RA did a great warm, housey dubstep Appleblim mix, although I skip over 90% of the minimal stuff that RA seems to be super stoked on, and EE is always solid, The Teknoist and Pangaea would be highlights Some of this stuff might be a little old, like not this year. Anyone else feeling those Sakamoto and Alva Noto cds? Very very cool stuff, especially the second, whatever that's called. Peace! The new solo album from Alexis Taylor of Hot Chip is great stuff. Ranging from abstract electronic drone style sounds to analogue organ ballads. Ace album, called Rubbed Out. Metro Area has a Fabric mix out (Fabric43), not too much IDM, but great disco and classic house from the 70s and 80s. Very nice stuff, if you like Morgan Geist or Metro Area you should check it out. Helios new album Caesura is nice too, very smooth and no rough edges at all, but suiting for calm mellow autumn days. Acoustic ambient style, but maybe if you didnt like the last ones, this might not be your thing either. Claro Intelectos album from this year, Metanarrative is really nice and dark electronica styled techno. The remix album from Studio "Yearbook 2" is also very very good, from this spring. Balearic style music, very nice sounds, and on the somewhat same note Lindstrøms album "Where you go, I go too" is incredible. Been an incredible year music wise, and there's still some time to go. :) These are just a couple of things on top of mind from this year, there are so many more.. /F
