Heh. Um, anyone know of any good lounge music out there? I was in this old dusty record store and the dude had some kick ass vintage lounge music playing. No lyrics, just raw, crackly, minimal lounge. I peeled myself away from an old boards of canada record to give a listen, and I noticed that it really kicked ass! But, I didn't get the name of the band. So yeah, I'm looking for that kind of lounge. If anyone knows I would love to know, thanks loads. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The definition of 'lounge' is usually pretty vague, so unless you define what exactly you were hearing, it could go from exotica / 50's-60's bachelor pad music (Martin Denny, Yma Sumac, etc.), down to recent Ninja Tune, which for some reason some people call 'lounge' music as well (perhaps because of the source of many samples used...). It could also be anything from modern 'dub' like Kruder & Dorfmeister or Thievery Corporation, to Latin Jazz. It's very vague. What musical instruments were used (if you could distinguish them)? Was it mostly electronic or acoustic? Did it 'sound' old or recent? Could you compare it to any artist you already know that used similar sounds? Did you try allmusic.com's genre tree? That's usually pretty helpful when you want to start looking into a genre (and you can listen to loads of stuff, making it easy to save money by not buying tons of compilations you might end up never listening to in the long run). Like Francis said, lounge is a vague term, and adding "experimental" to that means almost anything could fly. So with that caveat, here's my recommendations for "experimental lounge" Xploding Plastix Wax Tailor - Tales of the Forgotten Melodies Legion of Green Men - Floating in Shallow Water (oldie but very nice)

First and foremost I would reccomend Tipsy. Excellent weirdo lounge music. The Tipsy remix album from several years ago might be a good place to start because it features a number of remixes by musicians that might fall into the nebulous realm of "experimental lounge" so you might find a bunch of tangents to explore through that. The Stock, Hausen & Walkman pair of Organ Transplants albums are also very good and pretty loungy. And then Messer Chups / Messer Fur Frau Muller are two related bands doing a kinda lounge/surf thing that I like a lot. And you can't go wrong with End... his more recent stuff kinda straddles lounge, surf and spy music. My personal favorite is The Sounds of Disaster. -Aaron Tammy Smulders wrote:

Les Baxter, a member of Martin Denny's band until he split to release his own material, would also be well worthy of your attention. More "experimental" than lounge : People Like Us (Thermos Explorer), Tom Recchion, Mike Cooper (Rayon Hula - lushly beautiful lap steel tiki stylings coupled with the sinister stirrings within the tropical undergrowth, or something). More space age bachelor pad than "lounge" but still worthy of a nod : Stereolab (Kyberneticka Babicka for starters), Tortoise (TNT/pieces of Millions Now Living...) and Stock, Hausen and Walkman (Organ Transplants). I wholeheartedly endorse the Mike Cooper recommendation - his work is absolutely beautiful, and Brian's description, despite sounding like a press release, is pretty damn accurate. Also, for more recent, accessible work, Skalpel's self-titled on Ninja Tune laces crackly jazz, lounge and gogo; which might be what you're after. -- Kurt If honour and wisdom and happiness are not for me, let them be for others.
