I've found that the following go over very well with people dancing Chok Rock - Big City Loser - Give it Up (Warp) (The bass in this totally freaks people out) !!! - Me And Giuliani Down By The School Yard (A True Story) - Intensifieder (Sunracapellectroshit Mix 03) (Warp) Funckarma - Untitled - Anger (i'm pretty sure it's that side) (Skam) Nosrep - Just Don't - Untitled A1 - Spezialmaterial Cane - Teknotest/Fall - Teknotest - Arcola Also most modeselektor goes over very well and i've been itching to play the first LFO track on that AFX/LFO split because it's a f*cking devastating track. Sorry that this list is mostly dancy idm stuff but i've played the above stuff for people who only like progressive house and trance and they were getting down in no time. ..jonathan.a On 10/23/05, David Hartunian <dhartuni@andrew.cmu.edu> wrote:

chris clark-clarence park ep this, next to astrobotnia, maybe the idm i've had the most success selling to friends, and clarence park is such ridiculous fun. silly jump around music. also joseph nothing is fun. 'red hot car' is nice. chris clark... i was very upset with 'these bones of you' at first, very angry, too different, not fun... eventually i realized that it is the greatest album ever and i absolutelty cant wait to hear what he does next.

For parties that aren't people who are into "idm", usually glitchy, poppy mash-up shit, girltalk, bitmeddler, 606 etc. or aphex is the stuff that usually goes over. Part of the setlist for a set I played in Cambridge at an IDM night recently: boards of canada - oscar see through red eye // the campfire headphase // warp bjork - all is full of love (funkstorung rmx) // fatcat compilation radiohead - everything in its right place // kid a // emi (with boards of canada - nlogax // hi scores ep // skam, kraftwerk - radioactivity // the mix // emi, new order - blue monday // substance // emi) new order - blue monday // substance // emi ulrich schnauss - on my own // a strangely isolated place // cco I got cheered when both the Radiohead and New Order tracks dropped (the Radiohead thing is a bit of simple Live live remixing, but it sounds quite nice...), which surprised me a bit (in a good way) - because I thought I was being a bit cheeky playing those to that crowd. I reckon you can get away with murder, really, as long as you can dance to it and it's not *too* far from the expectations of your audience. - andrew / covert -- http://www.lexical.org.uk/ | http://covertmusic.com/ "oh why don't you don't you don't you / stay glued to your TV set?" --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

If you can safely pull it off you can get really fantastic responses by slipping IDM beats under recognizable tracks... one of my faves is taking the Soul Oddity remix of Phoenecia on Schematic and slipping it underneath Get The Balance Right by Depeche Mode... that particular blend is actually on-line in a couple of places... I dropped it in the My Detroit mix a few years back (recorded a few hours before packing up all my gear to move across country)... but there are a couple of glitches as the screen saver came on while I was recording and caused a bit of a hiccup... I recreated that section of the mix when I was putting together a recent Control To Chaos show - sans hiccup. My Detroit also features Your Silent Face by New Order riding overtop of an old Gez Varley record on ~swim... which some of you may dig. links: http://www.djfishead.com http://fishead.gabber.org/audio/Fishead_-_My_Detroit.mp3 http://controltochaos.ca show #7 tracklisting.... I think the flip side The Beach deserves a resurrection though... it's recognizable as a mix of the same track, but the vocoder vocals shift it into more contemporary territory... the echo on the drums is also pretty sweet. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
