Haha - here we go again - another argument looms... So allow me. How exactly does digital 'sound bad'?? All my remastered copies of Zeppelin's entire works - digitally restored, originally from analogue - sound better than ever! Analogue sounds good but deteriorates over time if not 'looked after' and is subject to deterioration by physical elements unlike digital recordings. Yes, HD/Digital recording is subject to unrecoverable data loss - so what do you do if you lose your analogue masters then???! What's the difference?? You either have it or you don't. Analogue or digital. At least if you make a copy of something digital the quality is better than copying analogue. Besides, digital is just easier to handle, store and use. Even if it was somehow *proven* that analogue was better than digital - I doubt I could be bothered sat around chopping up bits of tape and splicing it back together to write music or make recordings. well then there is the great possibility of signal loss resulting in the same occurrence as a faulty cable. sorry, that thought was on my mind, even though i sympathize witrh the sentiment. but really...why must this argument come up? both kinds of media have their strengths and weaknesses. a lot of great-sounding music has been captured on analog and then mixed or remastered in digital. not to mention gear of both stripes creating its own sound. don't forget people using whatever means necessary to create. not everyone can afford the technology necessary to make music digitally. if all you can manage is a secondhand casio and a $20 cassette deck, you could find a way to be creative that way. in fact i'm sure several albums have been made with that kind of setup, the lo-fi sound becoming hip in the process. so let's stop this argument right here and say: to each their own, and whatever works. d. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Yeah, however nobody has ever suggested to me that one might need to wrap a CDR in aluminum foil for shipping purposes. Digital recording doesn't "sound bad" unless you are using tiny samples or too low of a sampling rate. Archiving digital data isn't at all dangerous. in fact, you can record hundreds of copies across multiple digital formats with no quality loss whatsoever. let's see analogue do that. both formats are subject to unrecoverable loss, but again, if you lose your analog masters you have lost a generation of quality, whereas you can lose digital masters, and a copy of a copy sounds just as good as the original. Honestly, both formats have their advantages and disadvantages, and clinging to one because it's "superior" closes your mind to the possible advantages of another for given applications. I have to agree on that though :) Btw, I wasn't talking about producing using digital only, which is something that link focuses on. Analog devices definatly have more "warmth" than their digital counterparts, but that's not what it was about.
