I saw World of Osymyso up there a week ago or so. I was considering
buying the newer Skam albums (Mr 76ix, Shadow Huntaz), and as soon as I
decided against it I saw it down at the bottom of the drop-down list.
I remembered Osymyso from Sprawl 5-6 years ago, and that was a fun
album, if also one I got rid of within a year, so I thought "what's he
been up to?" The usual gimmicky silliness as far as I can tell, though
I did have to buy "Intro Inspection" - gimmicky as well, but fun!
I was happy to see Domino has been added - in the same way I was happy
when Ninja Tune was added - I like some of their output, but
unfortunately for Bleep I already own the stuff I like on CD. The sweet
spot for pay-for-download services is rarities, B-sides, vinyl-only...
See, when I want to try something out, I don't want to just try a
30-second sample (or 30-seconds at a time like Bleep). I want to try
the whole thing. A sample might sound good, but the whole album may
well suck, or at least be boring. So I'll download an album from slsk
and listen to it in total. If I like it, I'll buy the CD. If I don't,
I'm not going to listen to it.
Because I like so much music, I usually let singles & other rare tracks
slide; I'd rather spend my limited money on full albums by the artists I
love than some single or compilation with a couple cool tracks or
remixes. I do end up downloading just the tracks I want from slsk,
though, and that's where Bleep & places like it could make a killing
(from me, anyway). I want good quality versions of these rare tracks,
and that's all I want. And especially in the case of vinyl, I won't buy
it. I simply won't. I'd rather get a good-sounding download direct
from the label, and failing that, I might try to find it on slsk -
someone else's recording of the vinyl will likely sound better than mine.
So, yes, I would notice if Bleep added those 7" Skam releases, older
Warp vinyl-only tracks... I would buy them. I keep checking Bleep once
a month or so to see if some of it is there, but I would hope they would
advertise the fact if they added them. I did buy the autechre Keynell
remixes when they appeared a few months back.
I *am* itching to get good-quality MP3s of the rarer music that, up til
now, I have usually gone to slsk to get. If I was buying the CDs to
begin with, I'm not going to also (or instead) buy MP3s. If I can't buy
it for some reason but was willing to go through the trouble of finding
it on slsk, I'd rather easily get good versions from Bleep (or similar).
As for Arcola, good. Why would they do an off-shoot label for stuff
that belongs on Warp in the first place? Never made any sense to me.
Hello? You're an electronic label. I realize you're now trying to be
an indie rawk & hip-hop label, but there's no reason electronic & techno
can't fit in right along side. Maybe I just missed the point.
