While I agree that a vocalist will understand very much about music, the control of their voice, and everything that you say, that doesn't mean that they can simply hear a song and instantly write lyrics that go along with it, or are what the original artist is looking for. I've known a handful of vocalists, and they all sing very nicely and can change tone, timbre, and emote very well with lyrics. But none of them have been good at writing the lyrics. It goes with any instrument. A very skilled guitarist doesn't necessarily mean they're any good at writing original material. Just as an example, if I write a song and thing "this needs lyrics," I don't think "this just needs any old lyrics." I have a theme in my head, an idea, and THOSE are the kinds of lyrics that I need. I don't need to just give the song to someone and say "here, sing something over this. come up with whatever you want." I need to talk to the vocalist, talk to them about lyrics, have an actual conversation. Simply having a repository of songs that "need vocals" don't help anyone. Having a repository of songs that the original artist feels need vocals and would like to talk to interested vocalists about adding them would be far more beneficial. Not only can you discuss the type of lyrics involved, the chorus parts, the parts that should be extended for more vocal space, or how the original artist intends to incorporate the vocals, but you can get to work together and make the song better *because* of the input, not simply because you tacked on some singing. derek -- eggytoast.com -- eggtastic.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
