i don't know the situation at the moment, but "weirdo lounge music" has been quite popular in russia in the recent years amongst the people who are into electronic music (you can find these influences in almost any russian electronic band, including "tetris" on pork recordings). "messer fur frau muler" has been the leader of the wave, but in russia and post soviet countries (including our lithuania) it always went under the russian version of the name (nozh dlia frau muller). since lithuanians share some of this russian/post soviet mentality, that kind of music gained popularity here as well, because it used lots of old russian movies/animation samples we can all relate to. i personally haven't been a fan of this wave (although i do like it, and "frau muller's" concert in vilnius (lithuanian capital) was great), so i can't give any directions, maybe except the russian label "snegiri". out of post-soviet producers i personally favor guys like fizzarum (or idm unrelated reggae-punk-soul band 5nizza from ukraine). on the russian idm tip, has anyone here heard of a project "sever" ("north" in english)? i got their 4-track cd which is great, but i know nothing about them (i only vaguely remember that the person who gave it to me told they are form riga (latvia)). any info would be appreciated. -----Original Message----- From: Aaron D Meyers [mailto:adm226@nyu.edu] Sent: Wednesday, November 12, 2003 9:06 PM To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [idm] re: loungey idm On the Tipsy remix album that came out last year, there was a track remixed by Messer Chups that got my attention. So I bought a couple of their CD's and really liked them. Kinda loungey, lots of warbly sci-fi synths, spy/surf guitars and a presiding theme of b-movie horror flicks. Also of note is that the duo is Russian. I wanted more so I looked for them on soulseek and found some compilation called "Hyper Utesov Presents..." and it had several Messer Chups tracks on it as well as a really great selection of oddball electronic lounge weirdness from a number of other artists, all with names suggesting Russian descent. Information on Messer Chups and any of the other artists is scarce on the web. Most of what I found is in Russian. But I'm really curious... is there some kind of weirdo lounge music scene going on in Russia? Anyone on the list know more about this stuff? The Messer Chups divider at Kim's Underground has a couple solo CD's by Oleg Kostrov (.5 of Messer Chups) that I haven't had a chance to buy yet, but I'd really like to know more. -Aaron ----- Original Message ----- From: nethed <nethed@ninjatune.net> Date: Wednesday, November 12, 2003 12:13 pm Subject: [idm] re: loungey idm
